sidewinder Posted May 18, 2019 Report Posted May 18, 2019 (edited) Whilst perusing the ‘news’ section on the Jazzwise Mag site it would appear that there is not only a forthcoming ‘new’ Tubby Hayes Fontana album from 1969 coming out (a major new work, apparently) but also a box set in the works comprising all of Tubby’s Fontana albums newly remastered and presumably with a load of out-takes. Gearbox Records is mentioned so presumably vinyl, no doubt CDs and downloads to follow, as per Rendell/Carr. This is really fantastic news - the box will also have booklet notes by Hayes Authority Simon Spillett. http://www.jazzwisemagazine.com/breaking-news/15253-major-unreleased-tubby-hayes-fontana-album-crowns-11lp-box Edited May 18, 2019 by sidewinder Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted May 18, 2019 Report Posted May 18, 2019 If that's Tubby Hayes, he was a lot thinner than I thought he was. Quote

sidewinder Posted May 19, 2019 Author Report Posted May 19, 2019 (edited) Simon Spillett mentions this ‘lost’ session for Fontana with the Louis Stewart lineup in his bio. Great that it is finally to be released, in full. That particular band was very fine indeed. Incidentally, just listening to Tubby in his unlikely 1965 big band recording with Friedrich Gulda. Good stuff ! Edited May 19, 2019 by sidewinder Quote
sidewinder Posted May 19, 2019 Author Report Posted May 19, 2019 (edited) Incidentally, the 11LP box set will presumably include ‘The Orchestra’, Tubby’s final Fontana LP release back in the day. I don’t think that one has ever been reissued - maybe in Japan on limited issue but if so I haven’t seen it. That one is a very pleasant LP, although obviously aimed at the easy-listening market. clifford_thornton Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 11 LP Gearbox set? That is something else. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 19, 2019 Author Report Posted May 19, 2019 (edited) I guess the success of the 6LP Rendell/Carr release has impressed the suits at Universal enough to take a punt. No doubt very limited run. Edited May 19, 2019 by sidewinder Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 yeah, it's not on the Dusty site yet but I'll keep my eye out. Quote

jlhoots Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 And on top of it one composition by Columbus Calvin "Duke" Pearson - never knew that was his "real" name!! Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 20, 2019 Report Posted May 20, 2019 I’ll definitely be interested in springing for the box set if/when it’s released in CD format. Quote
