brownie Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 There is a huge fire now going on at Notre Dame cathédral. I live à few blocks from the place. Hope the fire will not spread too far. No victim reported yet. Hope the damage will not be too important. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 (edited) Sorry to hear that, Brownie. Stay safe, here’s hoping that any historical damage is minimised. Edited April 15, 2019 by sidewinder Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 It is beginning to look like a total loss for the interior. Now it looks like they're just trying to save the shell. I'm very saddened by this. One of my highlights of my visits to Paris. Quote
HutchFan Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 Terrible, terrible news. So sorry to hear this. Quote
Matthew Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 Sad and terrible! The one time I was there, I was in such awe of the place, so much history, so much greatness passed through its door. Quote
EKE BBB Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 (edited) Just saw it in the news. What a complete disaster! I hope all is ok at your place, brownie! https://www.google.es/amp/s/amp.lasexta.com/noticias/internacional/alvarez-incendio_201904155cb4dc420cf2bb473d58ea07.html https://www.lemonde.fr/societe/article/2019/04/15/incendie-en-cours-dans-la-cathedrale-notre-dame-de-paris_5450533_3224.html Edited April 15, 2019 by EKE BBB Quote
sgcim Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 Horrible tragedy. Many statues were off-site undergoing restoration. The cathedral itself was undergoing renovation. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 What a tragic loss. So sad to find this out. Quote
porcy62 Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 I have no words to express my sadness, Guy. Quote
Daniel A Posted April 15, 2019 Report Posted April 15, 2019 Very, very sad. So sorry to hear this. Quote
J.A.W. Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 (edited) Terrible. One of the great European cathedrals and a centre of medieval polyphony. I'm interested in cathedrals like the Notre Dame purely from a secular perspective, it's part of our history and culture. One doesn't have to be religious to appreciate that. kinuta Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 Awful news, even in a world of constant awfulness. A great and unrecoverable cultural loss. Quote
EKE BBB Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 The fire is now under control: https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/notre-dame-fire/index.html Quote
brownie Posted April 16, 2019 Author Report Posted April 16, 2019 Heavy damage but the two towers still stand. The cathédral will be rebuilt! Quote

It isn't the first time for this cathedral. Even the spire that fell was less than two hundred years old, not original to the building. This is now an opportunity to relearn and remake this wonderful building. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 (edited) At least the results appear not to be as disastrous as that of the Glasgow School of Art, the loss of which I mourned pretty heavily too. My wife and I spent our honeymoon in London, and Glasgow in 2001 - and we stayed just 2-3 blocks form the School of Art - and saw every one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's buildings in and anywhere near Glasgow on that trip (8-9 major projects in all). Here it is shortly after the fire, and in all it's glory before (down below)... Edited April 16, 2019 by Rooster_Ties Quote
jazzbo Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 SO sad. An amazing space. . . being inside was a vivid and moving experience for young me. I am confident it will be rebuilt well in the near future. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 (edited) I'm amazed to see the interior pictures and seeing that the altar is still there. Votive candles were still lit. It looked far more devastating from the outside. However, from the sounds of it, I will be long in the ground before it is restored to its full glory, so I am very glad to have been able to walk through it twice. That library was a stunning room to enter. Let Notre Dame at least escape that fate Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 16, 2019 Report Posted April 16, 2019 (edited) Now they're saying 10-15 years to rebuild it... hmmm... maybe I can see it once more before I go? I don't get why they're concerned with not having the right wood to rebuild the roof's substructure. It's not visible - ever hear of steel beams? https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/notre-dame-fire/h_8dea292b00ff98263f67ce361f637ad9 Edited April 16, 2019 by Kevin Bresnahan Quote
Brad Posted April 17, 2019 Report Posted April 17, 2019 It took hundreds of years to build the Cathedral. It may take decades to rebuild. Quote
