felser Posted yesterday at 07:27 PM Author Report Share Posted yesterday at 07:27 PM Got mine yesterday via Amazon. Sampled the sound. Similar to the new Tyner/Henderson/DeJohnette, it's functional but definitely sub-optimal, the drums being the victim here. But I wouldn't be without this one. mjazzg
I have a number of live Tolliver quartet dates and I'm thinking this is another of much the same so not entirely essential. Anyone like to suggest otherwise, I'm open to persuasion as Joan said

Anyone like to suggest otherwise, I'm open to persuasion... I feel the same way. I'd be especially interested to hear how this new archival release compares with Live at The Loosdrecht Jazz Festival (aka Grand Max) -- both musically-speaking and AQ-wise -- since both feature John Hicks in the pianist's chair. Under these premises the vast majority of archival releases is not entirely essential 😎 .... But probably "essential" is not the right parameter, Charles Tolliver in his peak years always warms my heart .... as simple as that .... Agreed. The Henderson/Tyner is "enjoyable" as this one probably is as well. Worth probably grabbing the CD version but not necessarily the insane hype (which I've seen more of regarding the former). I'll pick both up at some point, but not flipping my lid either (and I certainly dig Tolliver).

Soundwise, this doesn't hold a candle to Loosdrecht, and musically, they're on par with each other. Loosdrecht, the Slugs albums, and the ENJA Impact should all be purchased ahead of this (as should the studio albums from that period). Musically, this has a lot more life to it than the Tokyo album, which was always a disappointment to me, and I would recommend this new release ahead of that. If it occurs to you that you can live without this, you probably can, but it was a no-brainer for me to pre-order this, and I'm not at all sorry I did, even with the clearly substandard (but fully listenable) audio quaility. Thanks John, I was hoping for your take when I asked the question.
