miles65 Posted March 21, 2019 Report Posted March 21, 2019 Just got an e-mail,from Mosaic announcing that the Charles Mingus JWS set is on last chance. The Eddie Condon-Bud Freeman abd DuL set made a come back. But these are mostly short lived. Quote
Dmitry Posted March 21, 2019 Report Posted March 21, 2019 It’s sold out now. Maybe I made a mistake not ordering it... Quote
miles65 Posted March 21, 2019 Author Report Posted March 21, 2019 Just got a second e-mail. Responce on earlier mail was so strong the set is now sold out. Quote
Brad Posted March 21, 2019 Report Posted March 21, 2019 Glad I bought mine a few months on the assumption this day would happen sooner rather than later. Quote
Shrdlu Posted March 22, 2019 Report Posted March 22, 2019 This material is easy to find elsewhere, and there are even videos from the 1964 visit to Yurp, including an amazing bass clarinet solo on "Take The A Train". Quote
mjzee Posted March 22, 2019 Report Posted March 22, 2019 Don't remember if I posted about this box before. I loved it all, except for the first concert - too much Dolphy being Dolphy (I don't know why he doesn't bother me on the second concert; I think he's more melodic there). The other concerts are great, and made me realize I hadn't listened to him in awhile. He made music with a very definable personality, and I needed it again in my life. I was very impressed with Lonnie Hillyer's work - he's amazing in these concerts. Does anyone have an opinion about this; I'm a little put off by the # of duplicated songs: Quote

They're airshots, obviously, with a lot of different players (especially pianists) along with a few of the same ones. Don't know how many songs there are on it, plenty of compositions. It's Boris Rose-sourced, iirc, so that's the sound quality. Plenty good for me, but people are less tolerant. Quote

Tom in RI Posted March 22, 2019 Report Posted March 22, 2019 Haven’t heard the cd release but I’ve had this material as a dl’ed ROIO, have enjoyed it quite a bit. As a young fan in the ‘70’s I got used to Bird airshots so listening to these recordings has been no problem at all for me. Quote
medjuck Posted March 23, 2019 Report Posted March 23, 2019 I Like it too. The only piece that's repeated really a lot is "Eat That Chicken" which is very short and which he uses as a theme to signal the end of a set. How can you you have too many "Eat That Chicken"s? Quote
JSngry Posted March 23, 2019 Report Posted March 23, 2019 It's a sign-off, so yeah, there's that. Like Bird and 52nd Street Theme. It means time to go, be back soon. But it's a pro move, for sure. Who today has a break tune/sign-off theme? Who plays enough gigs to need one? Quote
medjuck Posted March 23, 2019 Report Posted March 23, 2019 I still hear people use Miles's (really Kenny Dorham's?) Theme. The first one, recorded for Prestige. Quote
JSngry Posted March 23, 2019 Report Posted March 23, 2019 Yeah, they use somebody else's. Who's got their own these days? Quote
paul secor Posted March 23, 2019 Report Posted March 23, 2019 (edited) The Art Ensemble had (has?) "Odwalla" which is a cool theme. Edited March 23, 2019 by paul secor Quote
Brad Posted April 5, 2019 Report Posted April 5, 2019 Jazz Messengers has this, for anyone who is looking for it. Quote

It has been a while since I saw him live, but Willie Nelson goes to "Whiskey River" several times in a show, usually marking transitions. Quote
