JSngry Posted March 18, 2019 Report Posted March 18, 2019 They appear to be Bob Shad related. Mostly material from the Sittin' In/Jax labels, although that Getz/Billie thing, I don't know where that one began life. Quote

hopkins Posted Saturday at 09:57 PM Report Posted Saturday at 09:57 PM I have the "Paul Quinechette Quintet" (notice the typo on his name) Dale EP 204, which is in fact a 45 rpm 7". I purchased on ebay. Great music. It has all been re-issued by Fresh Sound Records. What is the story of "Dale Records"? Quote
JSngry Posted Sunday at 12:32 AM Report Posted Sunday at 12:32 AM The Billie/Getz thing is a live recording from Storyville. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted Sunday at 12:37 AM Report Posted Sunday at 12:37 AM I used to have a copy of that. Quote

All of the tracks (8)(Storyville Oct/Nov 51), from this 10" (& the 2 EPs, #205/206) were released on the Billie Holiday ESP 4CD set "Rare Live Recordings 1934-59". Actually, 15 tracks from this location & similar time period were released in this set. BTW, Stan only plays on 3 tracks. Quote

Daniel A Posted Monday at 02:37 PM Report Posted Monday at 02:37 PM In any case, new entries should only be submitted to Discogs with a copy in hand. That being said, I know that adherence to this rule is deficient. Quote

I've seen this previously & wonder if those alts are actually the Parts 1 & 2 from the 10" LP ie the alt is part 2 for the LP - just a guess, otherwise the 10" would be a very short (EP size) recording - the 10" LP actually has 7 tracks according to an online sale description Here's another version of this session The Birdland Quintet / Paul Quinichette Quintet Paul Quinichette as Vice Prez, tenor sax; Kenny Drew, piano; Freddie Green, guitar; Gene Ramey, bass; Gus Johnson, drums. JSngry Posted 23 hours ago Report Posted 23 hours ago Paul Q was recording as a leader for Mercury/Emarcy (Bob Shad) and then this one session pops up on his brother's label? And then one track ends up on a Mainstream record with a bunch of B. Shad stuff from the Sittin' In With label? Did Bob Shad really have a brother, and if so, was his name really Sonny Lester? Quote
mikeweil Posted 13 hours ago Report Posted 13 hours ago The only way to answer questions about take identities would be audible comparsion of all the "takes". But I don't think any collector has all these releases. The Ocium CD is the only one with all "takes". https://www.discogs.com/release/15080826-Paul-Quinichette-PQ-Special p.s. track timings would be very helpful to identify takes, but most discographers are too lazy to list them. That's another proof most web discographers copy and paste instead of researching and collecting and listening to the records. Quote

(as you said Mike, you'd need to listen). Is part 2 an alternate take of part 1 as some discographies suggest or are they continuations from part 1? Edited 11 hours ago by romualdo Quote

I just listened to them on the Ocium CD. Definitely different takes of the same tunes, sometimes with slightly different tempos, different solos and piano intros. I always wondered why they were named "part". Edited 38 minutes ago by mikeweil Quote
