(Or am I missing something -- are the rest of these people somehow connected to "Hollywood" -- ??) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_college_admissions_bribery_scandal#Indited_people Participants in scandal[edit] 50 people have been charged as part of the ongoing investigations. Of these, 33 are parents of college applicants and nine were collegiate coaches.[30] Notable indicted individuals include: Indited people[edit] William Rick Singer, purported college counselor, and author of self-help book for college admission. Singer is alleged to have organized and sold fraudelent college addmission services.[1][2] Parents accused of paying for admission[edit] Jane Buckingham, marketing executive and self-help book author Gordon Caplan, co-chairman of Willkie Farr & Gallagher Lori Loughlin, actor best known for role in Full House Mossimo Giannulli, husband to Lori Loughlin and fashion designer[31] Manuel Henriquez, former CEO of Hercules Captial, an investment firm[32][33] Douglas M. Hodge, former CEO of PIMCO[34][35] Felicity Huffman, actor best known for role in Desperate Housewives[36] Bill McGlashan, founder of TPG Growth, a division of TPG Capital[37] Marci Palatella, distillery owner and businesswoman, wife of former NFL player Lou Palatella[26] David Sidoo, Canadian businessman and former professional football player[38] Coaches accused of involvement[edit] Jorge Salcedo, Major League Soccer player and UCLA coach[39] Gordon Ernst, former Georgetown University tennis coach[40] John Vandemoer, former Stanford University sailing coach[21] Jovan Vavic, former University of Southern California water polo coach[21] Other participants[edit] Mark Riddell, a Harvard University alum and former director at IMG Academy. Riddell was employed by Singer to fraudulently take admission tests, impersonating the clients' children, and paid Educational Testing Service and ACT contractors to deliberately misadminister the tests.[14] Olivia Jade Giannulli - Loughlin's daughter and Instagram influencer got into USC after her parents paid Singer. Olvia commented through Twitter that she didn't "care about anything" she was learning in college.[41][42] Since you've invested serious time in in your post, I'll expand the Hollywood do-gooder list to anyone from the South California cocoon of non-profit board member wives, their gazillionaire husbands, and other glitterati. Criteria - have they ever stepped an a red carpet, and been asked "who are you wearing?". In other news - Jimmy needs a new keyboard. ghost of miles
So somehow this seems to be turning into a cudgel (judging from an idiot spouting things on Fox) to attack “elitists,” liberals, “do-gooders,” and “people who hate Trump.” Call me when we start working up some indignation over the folks who’ve attacked universities and the education system repeatedly over the past few decades, consistently cut funding at the state and federal level, called for or enacted cuts in financial aid, made it easier for the private sector to rip off students (see Betsy DeVos and current administration), and in general have made it much harder for average people to send their kids to college—that is, when they haven’t devalued the concept altogether, or perpetuated the notion that people who do attend and graduate from college are part of the “elite.” So yeah, this current story is certainly problematic, but it’s hardly the heart of the problem when it comes to access to higher education. I read it, and I think the title is more interesting than the content. In this case we are not dealing with the value placed on education to further someone's success later in life, like he describes in the 'good old boys' adage, but in education as a token indicator of wealth and prestige. Narcissistic parents view their children as an extension of themselves, and pony up to hundreds of thousands to circumvent the regular admissions process, imho akin to paying hundreds of thousands to plastic surgeons to circumvent the appearance of ageing. The difference is that having a nose job or a butt-job is legal and not frowned upon, and if these parents could openly pay for their children to attend college for way more than regular admission costs, they definitely would. They are just not wealthy enough to give a few million to donate to Yale and their kid is in by proxy, but they do have up to $500k to give someone with a proven track record of getting things done. That's why seeing that Kimmel lady on the list is weird. For her, and a couple of other really-really wealthy individuals it could be just proverbial greed. She was gonna save a couple of million...didn't quite work out. Edited March 14, 2019 by Dmitry

No need to call you, just turn the channel. You can see the "indignation" of those other folks you mention every day and night on pretty much every other broadcast. The story here is just about people that have the means to put their kids into any of the schools involved but apparently the kids did not have the grades and the parents the patience to do so. Their actions may have actually made it even harder for average people to send their kids to college. That should be what angers you, not what they are saying at Fox. Calls for cuts in federal financial aid have been just that as funding for education has and continues to go up. in 2018 Trump's proposed budget was $59 billion +/- but he signed spending $70 billion. In 2019 it is $81 billion.

In 2019 it is $81 billion. Yeah, I said the current story is problematic, but the way it's been posted and emphasized here as an attack on "Hollywood do-gooders" is waaaaayyy out of proportion to the problems of higher education access. Why single out this particular scandal? And yeah, the budget passed was no thanks to Trump, that's for sure. There's far more going on and that HAS been going on to make "it even harder for average people to send their kids to college" than this. When I first enrolled at IU, almost 80% of the school's funding came from the state. Now it's down to 22%, 35 years later, but the state still wants to control how tuition rates are set, etc. IU's just one of many state colleges that have had to try to attract out-of-state and foreign students, who pay much higher tuition rates, to help make up the difference. Teachers at the lower levels still aren't paid adequately and school systems still aren't getting adequate funding, mostly because of the ideology that's best exemplified by Fox, Trump, Betsy DeVos, etc. Why do you think we're seeing teacher strikes all over the country? Here's a story right here in Indiana from earlier this week: Hundreds of teachers rally for better pay and school funding So you know, forgive me if I'm not seeing this as "College-gate" or what have you. Yeah, it's obviously wrong and the people involved should be punished. But "Hollywood do-gooders" (and how many of these folks, as others have pointed out, are even truly "Hollywood"?) aren't the primary reason why so many average Americans are struggling to get access to higher education. Whatever the propaganda wing of the current administration and those who support it would have you think. The whole problem of income inequality that ties into this another issue, one that's been getting worse for the past several decades, but if you think the current administration is doing anything to help that instead of worsen it, you're definitely watching a different channel than me.
