Fronted by the extraordinary drummer and composer Allison Miller and featuring violinist Jenny Scheinman, cornetist Kirk Knuffke, clarinetist Ben Goldberg, bassist Todd Sickafoose and pianist Myra Melford, the sextet has been embraced by both fans and music cognoscenti alike, regularly performing sold out shows and garnering critical praise around the world. The Wall Street Journal declared, "Boom Tic Boom has a razor-sharp precision that recalls classic drummer-led ensembles of 50 years ago—the music of Art Blakey, Art Taylor and Max Roach come to mind—but Ms. Miller’s band works from a diverse sonic palette that is unmistakably contemporary." Indeed, Allison Miller's Boom Tic Boom's new studio album 'Glitter Wolf' is defined by the drummer's vision as a bandleader. With an unflinching devotion to progressive movement, the recording's cinematic arrangements are reflective of organized chaos and an urgency to always move the music forward, while interspersing moments of introspection and sheer beauty. Produced by Julie Wolf (Ani DiFranco, Carly Simon), Boom Tic Boom hit the studio for the 'Glitter Wolf' sessions at the famed Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA following a two-year stint of extensive international touring. Tracks like "Congratulations and Condolences," "Daughter and Sun" and "Valley of the Giants" are riveting and not easily categorized by genre as they commandeer spontaneous grooves and melodically rich compositions with a raw, but refined energy. On a spiritual level, 'Glitter Wolf' was inspired by the collective need for community and self-acceptance in an incredibly unpredictable time. The music shimmers with the spirit of empowering actions such as the #MeToo Movement and Black Lives Matter, while the dichotomy between suspect governmental policies inspiring rightful protests; embracing the varying degrees of the feminine and masculine from within or living a fulfilled yet challenging life are reflected back in musical juxtapositions of space versus density. Miller’s trenchant writing and Boom Tic Boom's soaring performances results in record that speaks directly to the zeitgeist of the moment. GA Russell Posted March 24, 2019 Author Report Posted March 24, 2019 ALLISON MILLER'S BOOM TIC BOOM Glitter Wolf IMPACTING NOW Featuring Allison Miller, Myra Melford, Jenny Scheinman, Kirk Knuffke, Ben Goldberg & Todd Sickafoose "These pieces have the sturdy, thwacking power of so much of Miller’s drumming — which is equally informed by punk and jazz — and the jostling momentum of an M.T.A. car on the move." — THE NEW YORK TIMES "Ten years into the band’s existence, these musicians are firing on all cylinders... Glitter Wolf sounds like an album by Boom Tic Boom—and no one else.” - DownBeat "...Allison Miller’s band Boom Tic Boom makes weird, arty party music." — STEREOGUM “Allison Miller celebrates the 10th anniversary of her band, Boom Tim Boom, with the release of Glitter Wolf, a collection of ten new idiosyncratic compositions featuring Miller’s deft drum work and compositional adeptness front and center, and all her ensemble’s raw but refined propulsive energy.” — JAZZIZ "...Glitter Wolf is undeniably accessible, gloriously melodic and funky as hell." — NEW YORK CITY JAZZ RECORD “Modern Jazz Icon in the Making” — ALL ABOUT JAZZ Quote
BFrank Posted March 27, 2019 Report Posted March 27, 2019 Will definitely check that out. I wasn't familiar with her work, but saw her in January with Carmen Staaf doing ‘Science Fair’ at the NYC Winter Jazzfest. Very impressive drummer! Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 27, 2019 Report Posted March 27, 2019 (edited) I don't know; this clip is just terrible; trying to be funky; the only one who has a clue as to how to get around in this type of piece is Kirk, but he can play anything; I find this sadly typical of some musicians who are used to playing "free" - there's a whole aspect of missing musical development; just listen to these solos; shocking for a group with a reputation: Edited March 27, 2019 by AllenLowe Quote
Larry Kart Posted March 27, 2019 Report Posted March 27, 2019 I agree with Allen. Inept diddling, it seems to me. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 28, 2019 Report Posted March 28, 2019 ok. I just can't find a good solo in that clip. Quote
JSngry Posted March 28, 2019 Report Posted March 28, 2019 I don't find it at all inept (quite the opposite) or funky (also quite the opposite). A perfect example of "modern jazz". One more reason why I just don't care about "modern jazz" these days. I'm glad they're popular, though. I would like to hear what they sound like when they're pissed off, not in some kind of formal "resistance" mode, but genuinely pissed off,. I bet not one of them owns a gun or a knife. Not that I'd expect them to admit it if they did, but, just sayin', they don't even project the possibility, and how pissed of can you afford to be if you don't hold the ability to arouse doubt in reserve? Larry Kart Posted March 28, 2019 Report Posted March 28, 2019 I think I know what Jim is saying, at least in part. However ironic in intent Boom-Tic-Boom's name is, this music is about as genuinely Boom-Tic-Boom as a band can be. But wait till you hear my new ensemble, Aggressively Harmless. Quote

Ok, all well and good as far as it goes, but I'm not sure that "weird, arty party music" is going to, uh, get it done (as a "certain type of American" would be prone to sometime say). Just play better, that's all. And aim your "power" to where it can land. Firing "weird, arty party music" bullets...where is that supposed to land? Know what it means to be a true militant as opposed to being a supporter of any number of "movements". There are people in the way and "weird, arty party music" ain't moving them anywhere. Have fun feeling good about yourself. Quote
JSngry Posted March 28, 2019 Report Posted March 28, 2019 And I mean, really, that clip is not awful. It's not great, but it's not bad. It's definitely "arty", definitely not "weird", and as for party, I'm sure there's a party for that somewhere. Not where I live, but ok, people can have their parties where they want. But if it's not bad, and it's not great, that leaves it just....nice. Nothing wrong with nice. But if your promo blurb is going to pimp your Right Side-ness, then...right side is going to be made right how, exactly? With nice? These are not leaders, these are followers. Followers are always welcome, but their survival is not guaranteed, nor should it be. Nice. Quote
jlhoots Posted March 28, 2019 Report Posted March 28, 2019 Knuffke & Melford both have provided me with a lot of great listening on many CDs. Quote

JSngry Posted March 28, 2019 Report Posted March 28, 2019 Pie, perhaps? I don't want to come to your house and not bring anything. A certain type of American finds that to be quite ungracious, to say nothing of unacceptable. Quote
