Maybe I’m getting old or jaded but I have the mini lp version of Blue Train, which doesn’t have the alternates of Blue Train or Lazy Bird, and that’s fine with me.

We're all getting old.  I don't think it's a sign of jaded to not $ up for every alternate take in existence.  And those alternate takes are readily available on the much cheaper Ultimate (McMaster) and RVG editions.  The Blue Train alternate is 46 seconds shorter than the released version, the Lazy Bird alternate is all of 5 seconds longer than the released version.  Not exactly massive re-thinkings of the songs.

The 80 Works reissue has a 2nd alternate of 'Blue Train' not available on the RVG or Ultimate reissues.  Blue Train is an album I never got around to acquiring, probably due to assuming it'd always be readily available due to it being Trane and on Blue Note, so it is worth it to me to get the complete version.

As for the similar song lengths indicating that the alternates aren't massive re-workings, that doesn't have much to do with it.  If the masters and alternates are approximately the same tempo and have solos of x amount of choruses, you'd expect them to be of similar lengths.  Were the masters later takes that were more polished, crystallized versions of ideas from earlier, alternate takes?  Even if the solos aren't markedly different, part of the allure of alternates is hearing the process that led to the master take.  However, sometimes takes with excellent solos get scrapped in favor of the take with the cleaner ensemble work.

One thing that this batch shows, is that the previously unissued tracks that were added to Japanese Blue Note issues from 2012 onward are kept for the later CD issues, at least in some cases. It would be minging not to retain these.

At the risk of cluttering the thread up, I will add my latest list of all the "new" tracks. The CD Japan site does not list the CD numbers, but Amazon Japan has high-resolution pictures that do show them.

Apart from the more obvious 'new' material of great merit (the extra Out To Lunch and Unity material especially, which I think are worth their weight in gold), I wanted to highlight this extra alternate of "Mode For Joe" that I think has only ever been issued on the 2015 SHM-CD issue of this title.

https://www.discogs.com/Joe-Henderson-Mode-For-Joe/release/11227057

Maybe not quite as 'revelatory' as the Dolphy and Young bonus tracks, I think this alt of the title track for Mode For Joe is just as lovely as lovely can be.  It's not a very bombastic track, and feels of being more 'through-composed' even -- but the alt is really *dramatically* different in the details (every nook and cranny of every solo instrument line is quite different from the released version), even if the overall effect is similar.

Those who know this album backwards and forwards (as I do, not the least of which being because it was one of the very first four (4) jazz albums I ever owned, and listened to extensively), should really enjoy this particular extra track.  Highly recommended, if it ever comes out again.

I must add hearty agreement with Rooster's post. It has been exciting to hear all these many "new" tracks, but the extra take of "Mode For Joe" is worth more to me than the total of all the other previously unissued tracks put together.

Like Rooster, I have known the original album for decades, and it is very special to me. The originally issued take of that track is superbly atmospheric, especially during Ron Carter's solo. When I heard that there is an extra (later) take, I was really keen to hear it. It is, as Rooster said, very different from the first attempt. Ha ha, the players had not memorized the first take.

Hearing that new take has been one of the most enjoyable experiences of the last few months.

It isn't right that it isn't readily available. Lobby Don Was.
