jazzkrow Posted April 20, 2003 Report Posted April 20, 2003 In the video of "Jazz in Harlem"-showing the famous photo by Art Kane-there is reference to an Esquire Magazine edition-Jan. 1958??-in which the photos taken that day were printed. Does anyone out there have this edition of Esquire? I'd sure like to get my hands on a copy-or even at a minimum just see the magazine article! So far E-bay has had no offerings and local old periodicals shops in my area-Portland-have had no copies. Any help/leads out there? Thanks! Quote
Out2Lunch Posted April 20, 2003 Report Posted April 20, 2003 try going to www.harlem.org for some information. Quote
jazzkrow Posted April 21, 2003 Author Report Posted April 21, 2003 Thanks, Tod! I posted on the Harlem site-should have thought of that site earlier! Hopefully, someone there may have some leads! Has anyone on this board ever seen the Esquire issue? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted April 21, 2003 Report Posted April 21, 2003 The issue had to have been published much later than January 1958. The picture was taken on August 13, 1958. I think it was January 1959. Charlie Graham has a book called "The Great Jazz Day" related to the photo. I don't own it and I'm not sure whether it reprints the Esquire article. Mike Quote
jazzkrow Posted April 21, 2003 Author Report Posted April 21, 2003 MANY THANKS, MIKE! Glad I did not buy the Jan. 1958 issue! I'll look for the book as well. Quote
jazzkrow Posted May 2, 2003 Author Report Posted May 2, 2003 I found out that the actual issue is Jan. 1959-not '58. Still have not found the issue-but thanks to Michael Fitzgerald's advice I did pick up a copy of the book, "The Great Jazz Day", which is all about that day in Harlem! It's a great book! Quote
