mikeweil Posted January 22, 2019 Report Posted January 22, 2019 (edited) Since nobody opened this annual thread so far, I thought I'd post this link to an overview by the Jazz Journalists Association: http://news.jazzjournalists.org/2019/01/final-bars-of-2018/ As always, too many .... Hardbopjazz Posted January 23, 2019 Report Posted January 23, 2019 Randy Weston was a major loss. Every time he played in NYC, I would make an attempt to see him live. I got to see him over the years, either solo or with his band 36 times. The last time, July of 2018, he debuted five new compositions which he hadn't recorded yet, at least to my knowledge. Quote
Justin V Posted January 23, 2019 Report Posted January 23, 2019 I am afraid that when I look at the list I will see people I didn't know had left us. I missed writing several remembrances when artists I admired passed away and I hope to rectify that. Quote
GA Russell Posted January 23, 2019 Report Posted January 23, 2019 A favorite of mine in ninth grade was The Ventures' Nokie Edwards, who passed away March 12 at 82. RIP. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokie_Edwards Quote

duaneiac Posted January 23, 2019 Report Posted January 23, 2019 Kind of sad to revisit all the passings from last year. There were some notable names on the list whose passing had escaped my attention: drummer Paul Togawa, pianist Johnny Maddox, pianist Gildo Mahones, Basie trombonist Bill Hughes, guitarist Wilbert Longmire, writer Lee Jeske, singer Yvonne Staples and singer Kellye Gray. Matthew Posted January 24, 2019 Report Posted January 24, 2019 Crap!! I didn't realize that Perry Robinson died! He was one of my favorites, I loved his playing on The Soul in the Mist, and his other work with Andrea Centazzo. Quote
