It's the same site, but we need a dozen different versions of this thread, cuz (damnit!!!) I can never find that other thread when I'm really looking for the cover of an obscure BN title -- something that isn't in the AMG.

So, thanks for starting another thread about this!!! 2 down, 10 to go!! ;)

It seems the standard way of writing computer software is to be able to get to a given place via several different menus. So, yeah... more threads to the same location sounds good to me too. :P

Hmmmmmmm.. I hadn't thought of that .. running up my post count by just uploading the entire contents of my "Jazz Sites" folder .....

I assume that I did not offend anyone by starting yet another thread with that redundant site ... being new here means that I will probably appear to reinvent lots of wheels. It is interesting that for someone who actually purchased albums when they were newly released that you "younger" people now rave about as "classics" is strange to me ... I have to check myself when I hear someone "discover" a Blue Note that I thought was great in 1958!! I remember with some mixed emotion, when in the early 90's during the "sane" days of rec.music.bluenote, someone asked me how I felt about acquiring my first copy of KINDA BLUE at its initially release. Ah Well ... I have learned a lot in my few short months on this list ... it is nice to know that there are still some of us true jazz fanatics around...

Here is another very interesting site of great jazz record cover art .... I hope that this is not too redundant ....

I'm most definitely not offended. (although, sometimes it is fun to be the first to make the remark that a new post has already been posted in a previous thread). Heh! :P

I'm 38 years old. I'm too young to have been alive and aware when the 1950s jazz was new. I always appreciate reading posts on this board, posted by somebody who was alive, aware, and knowledgeable of the jazz scene and how things were, back in the day.

Welcome garthsj. You are among friends here.

Did anyone ever provide information on how do d/l all the covers (images) in one fell swoop?  I know it was discussed, but seemed to be addressed privately, if at all.  Help please?

I took them all down by hand at the time. There are of course programmes out there to do this automatically. Try teleport pro, the freeware version is limited to a certain amount of files per download project, but I believe this is not a problem in this case. But you will need some playing around.

The programme works as follows: you enter a webaddress and the number of links the programme should work down the tree from there on. Note that if you say TWO, it will download ALL links on any page linked from the one you entered. This means that when you enter the URL of the first BN cover collection into the programme, not only the second BN cover collection main page (with all the thumbnails) will also be downloaded (first link) but all the large images one click down from the thumnails on that second BN cover collection page as well (and likewise all other collections). Sounds as if that is exactly what you need, but you can imagine the number of files exploding in this way, and you will reach the file limit.

To get around the limitation, you will have to download ONLY pictures and ONLY one link down from the web address you enter. You then enter each of the URLs of the single cover collection pages in seperate projects. The wizard will help you set things up (the button with the lightning on it). Let the programme search only ONE link down (those will be the large pictures), then tell it to ONLY look for picture files. This makes sure that it doesn't end up downloading all the other collections.

If you want a browsable collection on your harddisk, you simply download the index.htm file of each collection into the directory with the respective pics. To do that, go to the page and select [file]->[save as..] (DO NOT opt for "save with pictures" when downloading the index.htm page). You won't have the menu on the top, but I think that is only a minor inconvenience.

Thanks couw--let us know what you find out!

PJ

- download the programme I described above, install & open

- make a directory where you want to save your pics, e.g. [gokudo]

- open the wizard (click the icon with the Blitz)

- select the [search wesite for files of a certain type] option; click [OK]

- enter one of the following URLs:

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/WVocal1/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/WVocal2/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/SPRec/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/10inRec/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/SRollins/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/CBaker/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/BlueNote1/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/BlueNote2/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/BlueNote3/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/BlueNote4/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/BlueNote5/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/12in1/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/12in2/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/12in3/index.htm

http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/12in4/index.htm

- enter [1] where it is asked how deep you want to explore; click [OK]

- click [add] and select [Graphics]; click [OK]

- read the instructions and click [done]

- browse to the appropriate directory and enter a filename, this will create a subdirectory; e.g. entering SPRec, saves a project of that name and creates [./gokudo/SPRec]; click [save]

- now click the blue [play] arrow in the programme and download will start.

- when you're done, you can download the index.htm from the website (follow the above links and save in the appropriate directory where you have stored the pics). If you are using MSIE, Make sure you select to ONLY save the .html file, otherwise you will end up with a load of doubles for the thumbnails.

you can now browse to the directory and open the index.htm file there (double click). This opens the page from your hard disk (look at the address bar to make sure). As all links are saved relative and not as absolutes, you can click a thumbnail and you will be directed to a file on your harddisk (again check the address bar).

Hope it works. It does for me.

(PS. The programme allows for only 500 files to be downloaded in one project. I have noticed that almost all of the above linked pages contain less than that. There is one that has a little over 500, but only some buttons and background pics are not downloaded, nothing of importance to us I think)

I was not sure if this site has been posted before, and where I should post it, but I figured that putting it here couldn't hurt .. so ... some may want to take a look at this great site for LP covers, especially the early Blue Notes, and all of the 10" albums in glorious color.
