7/4 Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 Ornette Coleman (b. March 9, 1930) and a birthday broadcast on http://wkcr.org 'til midnight. I'm listening now via real audio. B) Quote
JSngry Posted March 9, 2004 Report Posted March 9, 2004 Also listening. It's been years since I checked out SKIES OF AMERICA, and they're playing it now, and I'm LOVING it! Quote
7/4 Posted March 9, 2004 Author Report Posted March 9, 2004 Also listening. It's been years since I checked out SKIES OF AMERICA, and they're playing it now, and I'm LOVING it! Same here. At least we're past the Phil Schaap part of the day. I used to like him, but he's taking FOREVER to tell a story these days! Sheesh! I want to pratice, but it looks like I'll be listening to SOA for now. Quote
7/4 Posted March 9, 2004 Author Report Posted March 9, 2004 That last section's melody reminded me of a track off of Science Fiction, the one with the Indian singer. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 And remember, every year after 24 hours of Ornette, 24 hours of Bix immediately follows. And just for this year, 3 billion hours of Coltrane after that. Mike Quote
Free For All Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 And remember, every year after 24 hours of Ornette, 24 hours of Bix immediately follows. Just out of curiosity, are there 24 hours worth of Bix recordings available? Quote
Dmitry Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 I'm on my 34th minute. . Hormolodic Industries/Verve I should get this stuff. Now vocal -- It's the only thing that will last of love future present and past is true.. Who's singing, do you know? Gospel-like. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Maybe 24 hours of Bix music doesn't exist, but Phil Schaap will recite (from memory) the 1903 Davenport city directory (twice - first by family name, then by street name) to fill the remaining time. If that doesn't do it, listeners may call in to try to stump him by giving the record issue number and he'll supply the title. Seriously, on all birthday broadcasts there are additional features that are included: interviews (live or pre-recorded), special sets - so material isn't just played once and never again. "Singin' the Blues" always gets multiple visits. And then there are the biographical narrations that Schaap does - they're interesting the first couple of times you hear them. But even then they need to be checked for accuracy. Mike Quote
JSngry Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Listening to the Bix thing on and off today. This is my first exposure to Phil Schapp on the radio. I have but one question: DOES THIS MOTHERFUCKER EVER SHUT UP?????? Quote
relyles Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 Listening to the Bix thing on and off today. This is my first exposure to Phil Schapp on the radio. I have but one question: DOES THIS MOTHERFUCKER EVER SHUT UP?????? Not from what I remember when I lived in NY and used to listen to the station and numerous times when I attended the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival and Schapp was the MC. Quote
couw Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 isn't the guy called Phil Sch AA p, with double-A, and not Scha PP, with double P? SchAAp means sheep in Dutch. This may help you to remember how to write his name correctly. BêêêêêêH! Quote
7/4 Posted March 10, 2004 Author Report Posted March 10, 2004 Listening to the Bix thing on and off today. This is my first exposure to Phil Schapp on the radio. I have but one question: DOES THIS MOTHERFUCKER EVER SHUT UP?????? No. And he's talking a bit slower than in past years. All but two minutes of the Bix I heard today were him chatting away. I learned stuff from these bday broadcasts in the past, but at this point I don't need to feel like I'm in a class I didn't pay for! I'm tuning in for the music. Maybe he could start a web page to document all this history... Quote
JSngry Posted March 10, 2004 Report Posted March 10, 2004 It would take forever to load, and then be only one page, if this broadcast is any indication... Quote
