Hardbopjazz Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 I've been in a Sir Roland Hanna mood and played all the CD's I have of him over the past few days. Are there any session where he is a sideman that you would recommend? I have most of his sessions as a leader and want to expand out to sessions he wasn't the leader. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 Not exactly obscurities, but he is excellent on two Mingus records, Mingus Dynasty and on Pre-Bird. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted November 26, 2018 Author Report Posted November 26, 2018 I have the two Mingus ones and I enjoy those. Now I forgot about the Mel Lewis and Thad Jones records. Quote
Milestones Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 I would recommend these: Kenny Burrell: On Stage at the Five Spot Cafe Ron Carter: All Blues Jimmy Heath: Little Man Big Band Quote

Also, there's a Voice of America broadcast of the Mingus Jazz Workshop from the Newport Jazz Festival, July 4, 1959, with Roland Hanna on piano. Quote
BFrank Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 The New York Jazz Quartet with Hanna, Frank Wess and George Mraz was great! Especially this one Quote
HutchFan Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 (edited) Some favorites: - Pepper Adams – Reflectory (Muse) - Richard Davis – Muses for Richard Davis (MPS) - Stéphane Grappelli – Parisian Thoroughfare (Black Lion) - Jim Hall – Concierto (CTI) - Jimmy Knepper – Cunningbird (SteepleChase) - James Newton – African Flower (Blue Note) - Sarah Vaughan – Crazy and Mixed Up (Pablo) Hanna co-led the New York Jazz Quartet with Frank Wess, so technically those weren't sideman gigs. But, if you've not already heard them, any Sir Roland fan should. I'm especially partial to Blues for Sarka and Surge (both on Enja). Edit: BFrank beat me to the punch on that NYJQ rec. BFrank Posted November 26, 2018 Report Posted November 26, 2018 I guess I did, HutchFan, but I actually missed the part of this topic being "side man" gigs for Sir Roland. So as you said, that's debatable for the NYJQ sessions. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 27, 2018 Report Posted November 27, 2018 I don't think I have many albums with him in a group setting, other than Thad Jones/Mel Lewis. But I have three of his solo piano albums that I like very much. Quote
