bertrand Posted November 18, 2018 Report Posted November 18, 2018 Does Don Cherry play a lot on this one, or is he just a sporadic guest? Thanks! Quote
king ubu Posted November 19, 2018 Report Posted November 19, 2018 No idea ... but teh backcover on discogs gives listings of soloists and Cherry is mentioned on all but the final piece: https://www.discogs.com/de/Bitter-Funeral-Beer-Band-With-Don-Cherry-K-Sridhar-Live-In-Frankfurt-82/release/1283163 Quote
mjazzg Posted November 19, 2018 Report Posted November 19, 2018 It's on Spotify if you want to listen Quote
corto maltese Posted November 19, 2018 Report Posted November 19, 2018 You can even watch the concert on YouTube! Cherry's playing with the Bitter Funeral Band was wonderful. The studio album (released under Bengt Berger's name) is also very, very fine. Quote
JSngry Posted November 19, 2018 Report Posted November 19, 2018 Ok, I have to ask: Bitter Funeral Beer Band what are the adjectives, and what re they modifying? Quote

Jim, am I allowed to reply seriously? The "bitter funeral beer" is brewed as part of the funerary rites of the Ghanaian Ewe people. The funeral music that Bengt Berger heard (and learned) in Ghana was the basis of his "Bitter Funeral Beer Suite" released on ECM. The band took its name from this recording. Quote
JSngry Posted November 19, 2018 Report Posted November 19, 2018 It was a serious question, and a serious reply is what was being sought. Thank you, now I know. Quote
king ubu Posted November 21, 2018 Report Posted November 21, 2018 so the funeral was bitter thus the band drank beer or the bitter beer led to the band being funeralised or maybe the bitter band had a beer at the funeral possibly also the funeral was bitter about having to settle for what beer the band left behins (none, possibly?) not quite sure, but the ECM album is indeed wonderful Quote

mikeweil Posted November 22, 2018 Report Posted November 22, 2018 The fact that I did not attend that performance at Frankfurt leaves me puzzled. Quote

Anybody's day has only 24 hours and conflicts of dates (or other reasons of non-availability) aren't a rare occurrence in anybody's life. Quote

Yes - would have been a once in a lifetime opprortunity for me to see Don Cherry. Maybe I couldn't afford the fesival ticket at the time. I liked the ECM CD very much when it was issued - enough to be tempted by that performance. Quote
