Chuck Nessa Posted November 9, 2018 Report Posted November 9, 2018 Very sorry to hear this, he has left many friends. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted November 9, 2018 Report Posted November 9, 2018 Sigh. A great musician and, judging from just a couple personal encounters, a sweet man. R.I.P. I have tremendous tapes from two nights he played in Urbana c. 1985 with a trio led by bassist Marlene Rosenberg and featuring saxophonist Ron Dewar. Quote
JSngry Posted November 9, 2018 Report Posted November 9, 2018 Awwww....I think I mentioned that a while back I got a barbershop shave, and the guy who did it was Robert Shy's nephew. Found that out by ordinary barber chair conversation, one thing lead to another, next thing you know, the guy's saying I got an uncle up in Chicago who plays jazz, just a local guy, you probably never heard of him...so maybe not, try me, what's his name? Robert Shy. Oh, yes I have heard of Robert Shy! The guy's face lit up, I could tell he was happy that somebody had heard of his uncle of whom it was very apparent that he was very proud. RIP to a guy that by all accounts spread the love. Quote

Michael Weiss Posted November 13, 2018 Report Posted November 13, 2018 Really nice guy. Saw him many times over the years in Chicago. Quote
Justin V Posted January 18, 2019 Report Posted January 18, 2019 I first heard Robert Shy with Rahsaan and later on Mike Smith's Cannonball tribute, Unit 7, an excellent album which benefits greatly from Shy's tasty drumming. Thank you for the music, Mr. Shy, and rest in peace. Quote
