Brad Posted January 26, 2019 Report Posted January 26, 2019 When will Machado and Harper get their big offers? Maybe never, so writes Thomas Boswell in the Washington Post. Quote
JSngry Posted January 27, 2019 Author Report Posted January 27, 2019 Oh good, ANOTHER collusion case to look forward to! Quote
paul secor Posted January 27, 2019 Report Posted January 27, 2019 No collusion whatsoever - at least in Harper's case. He was offered $300 mil. for ten years before all of this began, and he (and/or his agent) turned it down. He had his opportunity. Quote

The umpire was poorly positioned. It's as bad a call as the third strike on Dale Mitchell that handed Don Larsen his perfect game in the '56 Series. Quote

Dan Gould Posted February 5, 2019 Report Posted February 5, 2019 Here's a trade rumor the Yankees should f-ing jump at: Per Buster Olney, the Giants need outfield help desperately and might take Ellsbury off the Yanks hands in exchange for SP Johnny Cueto. Cueto just had TJ surgery is out for 2019, owed $68 mil, and Ellsbury has two years plus a contractual buyout for about $45 million. You know if they both equally sucked it would be a fine trade but Cueto has made 292 starts pitching to a 1.19 career WHIP. He'd be 33 making his return from TJ surgery. Ellsbury is, at best, replacement-level right now. I have to ardently hope this is purely Olney making shit up. Quote
Brad Posted February 5, 2019 Report Posted February 5, 2019 (edited) We are about two weeks from pitchers and catchers reporting and Harper and Machado don't appear to be any closer to signing than they did in November, not to mention players like Keuchel, Kimbrel, Moustakas and Marwin Gonzalez. Incredible. Either we have collusion or owners starting to exercise fiscal restraint and turning it into a buyer's market. Edited February 5, 2019 by Brad Quote

Incredible. Either we have collusion or owners starting to exercise fiscal restraint and turning it into a buyer's market. I think it's the latter. Just because players think they should get record-setting contracts and aren't doesn't mean owners are colluding in any way. It takes at least two to tango and the players aren't jumping at what they do get offered, you end up with major talent sitting around while their friends are reporting to camp. It will be interesting to see whether the next negotiation with the player's association is ugly or leads to a work stoppage of some sort. It took a while but the ideas they agreed to with a sort of soft salary cap is finally biting into the salaries at the very top of the market. Quote
paul secor Posted February 5, 2019 Report Posted February 5, 2019 Harper was supposedly offered $300 mil. for 10 years by the Nationals at the get go. He and/or his agent turned that offer down. It's on them, not the owners. Quote

Jon Morosi was on the radio today and he estimated Harper’s chances of returning to the Nationals at around 30%. Quote
