I first saw the Fort Apache band at Nightstage in Cambridge, MA with "guest soloist" Dizzy Gillespie around the late '80s. To see Diz so up close was extraordinary, but the band was equally exciting.

Subsequently saw the group in NY on several occasions including a Christmas Eve performance at Sweet Basil that will always stay with me. 

So much music emanated from the stage when that group performed. They were a treasure.  

What a terrible loss.

Sad news.  I'm not a great fan of latin music but from the small number of cds I have by the Fort Apache Band Gonzalez   are all terrific..

I think the Fort Apache Band was living proof that you could fuse the jazz stylistics of the 1960's Miles Davis Quintet with Cuban music - they limited themselves mostly to rumba, because that gave them an open improvisatory frame that other rhythms will not allow you to the same degree. But I think Jerry Gonzalez' greatest album was his first, a true Latin Jazz masterpiece:

Agree with you on "Ya Yo Me Cure" still in my heart it shares top honours with this one .... :

I have two of his albums and they are a lot of fun.  I wish that I could've seen him perform live.  Thank you for the music, Mr. Gonzalez, and rest in peace.

This guy lead so many great bands and was part of a few other great bands.  I became aware of him and his brother (and Oscar Hernandez, and Manny Orquendo and Chocolate Armenteros) through the band Grupo Folklorico Y Experimental Nuevaorquino and an album called "Concepts in Unity".  A great album.
