ctuck1 Posted September 25, 2018 Report Posted September 25, 2018 So to speak. This is a live recording from Copenhagen made on March 5, 1963. The tapes apparently result from a radio broadcast. Released by Gearbox with the permisison of the Monk estate. Rouse, Monk, John Ore and Frankie Dunlop. Available via Bandcamp this Friday, 09/28. https://theloniousmonk.bandcamp.com/album/m-nk Recorded at the Odd Fellow Palæet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odd_Fellows_Mansion,_Copenhagen Quote
hbbfam Posted September 27, 2018 Report Posted September 27, 2018 Is there an Amazon (or any U.S) link to buy this? Quote
ctuck1 Posted September 27, 2018 Author Report Posted September 27, 2018 looks like amazon has it... https://www.amazon.com/M%C3%B8nk-Thelonious-Monk/dp/B07FSRDLLF/ref=sr_1_3_twi_aud_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1538014147&sr=8-3&keywords=thelonious+monk Quote
Brad Posted October 3, 2018 Report Posted October 3, 2018 In Jazz Wax last night. New Monk: Denmark, 1963 Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 3, 2018 Report Posted October 3, 2018 That track Myers posted at the end of the blog is pretty strong, I must say. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 3, 2018 Report Posted October 3, 2018 Seems like a batch of excellent Monk to add to one's collection. Quote
king ubu Posted October 3, 2018 Report Posted October 3, 2018 Saw this in a store today, here in Udine (rather: the corpse of what must have been a fine store once) ... and wondered: so this hasn't been around previously? No previous boot or PD (as this is I guess) release? (Ah, Monk family nodded approval ... from a purely legal point of view - which isn't one we ozght to take all that often, but knowing it may help): does that make a difference?) Quote
Dan Gould Posted October 3, 2018 Report Posted October 3, 2018 It sounds like the source tape was closely held for a long time then rescued from a dumpster. If no radio broadcast happened this would be it, truly new Monk. Quote
JSngry Posted October 3, 2018 Report Posted October 3, 2018 Listened to the cut on Myer's site, and what immediately struck me was Monk's comping, and again, how repetitive Rouse sounds once Monk drops out. Fortunately, on that cut, that's for just one chorus. If the whole set follows suit, if Monk keeps the pace lively like this instead of just letting everybody goooooo oooooonnnnn, then this will be a good set, I might be interested, this might be the album that all of us like to think that this band always sounded like. Scott Dolan Posted October 3, 2018 Report Posted October 3, 2018 Just saw that this is available on Apple Music. Will listen to it soon. Thanks for the heads up! Quote
ejp626 Posted October 4, 2018 Report Posted October 4, 2018 I'm curious if tracks 6 and 7 are actually a different take of Nutty (track 2) or if it is just track 2 split into two "singles." Apple Music/iTunes only seems to offer the first 5 tracks. Quote

One of the dates must be slightly wrong. Quote

I was wondering about the legal one. And different question: at least with European labels (which Gearbox is, yes?): doing the right thing would include more than a deal with the Monk family ... sidemen/heirs, composers etc. Even if it's all PD. My guess would be when doing it "right" in Europe that would normt extend beyond "deal w/Monk family" usually (and even that isn't usual of course). Either way, slippery slopes galore ... which was what led me to wonder about the purely legal perspective in the first place (not saying "legal" is "right", but I think I have said that already). jeffcrom Posted February 24, 2019 Report Posted February 24, 2019 A friend at a local record store bugged me for a couple of months to buy this album. I always replied that I had tons of Monk on my shelves and didn't need more. But yesterday he was playing the record when I walked in, and I was sold within five minutes. A very strong performance, beautifully recorded and immaculately pressed. (I bought the LP rather than the CD.) Quote
Tom 1960 Posted February 24, 2019 Report Posted February 24, 2019 Listening to this now on Spotify. Excellent sound quality. Looks like I will be adding this to the collection. Big surprise. Quote
king ubu Posted February 24, 2019 Report Posted February 24, 2019 It's outstanding I think! Some really good Charlie Rouse ... one of the finest late Monk (Columbia period) live recordings. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 24, 2019 Report Posted February 24, 2019 Duh - missed that one. Went straight to the top of my must buy list. Quote
