I gave it a scrub on the ol' Nitty Gritty, played the LP once - and promptly sold it to Dusty Groove. Once was enough for me. Quote
JSngry Posted April 18, 2021 Report Posted April 18, 2021 Once is probably enough, two or three times over as many decades, sure. But "never" is not really a good option either. It's a record that happened, and it can't be unhappened. Quote
Milestones Posted April 19, 2021 Author Report Posted April 19, 2021 I seem to recall hearing 4 tracks from Destry. They were kind of fun, but this stuff is definitely a mere sidelight in Weston's career. Quote
JSngry Posted April 19, 2021 Report Posted April 19, 2021 There were a few (four?) on the Blue Note two-fer. Quote

But I also think there's something special about his solo piano recordings. When Weston performs alone, his very personal approach to the piano is on full display. Blues to Africa (Freedom) and African Nite (Owl) are two of my favorites. Weston's duo record with Vishnu Wood, Perspective (Denon), is another superb recording. I have a copy of African Nite on hold at my local record store. It is either the original US issue, or a reissue, on Inner City. I'm curious how the sound on that compares to the Owl records French version. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted November 10, 2021 Report Posted November 10, 2021 I may have some of the out of print Verve CDs from the radio station sale, if anyone is interested, let me know. Quote

In my experience, Inner City pressings usually aren't quite as good as their Euro-pressed counterparts. But IMO the difference is nowhere near enough to be a deal-breaker -- especially when the music is as good as African Nite. Edited November 10, 2021 by HutchFan Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted November 11, 2021 Report Posted November 11, 2021 I have long been obsessed with this tune, which has that private eye sound I adore: Quote
