Patrick Posted December 15, 2020 Report Posted December 15, 2020 While probably not completely within the "with strings" concept being discussed here, I am a fan of Miguel Zenón's recent Yo Soy La Tradición, a recording of chamber compositions based on Puerto Rican folk song forms. MZ is accompanied by the Spektral Quartet. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 Zenon is quite a writer. I may check this one out. Quote

One reason I liked it was that the title was misleading! I don't mean that I like misleading titles, but that the actual contents included some upbeat swingers, along with America the Beautiful. The album had as little to do with "rainy day lovers" as the album cover did. The charts were by Fischer, and were hip, as those things go. Quote
Tom in RI Posted December 16, 2020 Report Posted December 16, 2020 In the previous thread noted I mentioned Glen Wilson’s Trombari, The Devil’s Hopyard. There’s a review here: http://www.pointofdeparture.org/PoD39/PoD39MoreMoments7.html?fbclid=IwAR0u4AHdUUiD5Ww5Qjj-pMYIV7VLmZ6xo7BJDDH9rASEStLGQ5r2DI7Vr64 Another favorite with strings is Alan Ferber’s Nonet with Strings, Chamber Songs. https://www.alanferber.com/portfolio/alan-ferber-nonet-strings-chamber-songs/ I think both of these releases are really high quality and deserving of a wider audience. Joe Posted December 17, 2020 Report Posted December 17, 2020 Not necessarily a favorite, but an at-times interesting detour by a player worthy of wider recognition. Quote
Fer Urbina Posted December 18, 2020 Report Posted December 18, 2020 Hopefully close enough for jazz, but Jack Teagarden's Think Well of Me is beautiful. All songs by Willard Robison, at least some of the arrangements by Bob Brookmeyer. Top non-Xmas-yet-Xmasy music. F Quote

HutchFan Posted December 18, 2020 Report Posted December 18, 2020 (edited) A few more to add to the mix... David Liebman - Dedications (CMP, 1980) Also, has anyone mentioned the two Stanley Turrentine / Claus Ogerman collaborations? I thought at first "am I hearing things?" but it was really that. Quote
hopkins Posted January 11, 2021 Report Posted January 11, 2021 (edited) Here's another good one - Soft Lights and Bobby Hackett: https://www.discogs.com/Bobby-Hackett-Soft-Lights-And-Bobby-Hackett/release/5917829 Edited January 11, 2021 by hopkins Quote
DMP Posted January 22, 2021 Report Posted January 22, 2021 Cannonball made a couple with strings - early in his career, then later, for Capitol. Quote

Similarly, many other records with William S. Fischer on board, which are liable to turn up any damn where there for a while. Quote
gmonahan Posted January 24, 2021 Report Posted January 24, 2021 I'm listening to Big Tea's Capitol Strings album now ("Shades of Night"). What a sublime player he was. gregmo Quote

mhatta Posted January 24, 2021 Report Posted January 24, 2021 (edited) I guess some of you hate it (and myself is not usually an avid WM fan), but I do like Wynton Marsalis' "Hot House Flowers". I think it was the most ambitious (and maybe a bit arrogant) project by young Wynton. He obviously knew that it would be compared with Clifford Brown With Strings. Wynton may not have been able to beat Brownie, but I think at least he was still in the game. Edited January 24, 2021 by mhatta Quote
Larry Kart Posted January 24, 2021 Report Posted January 24, 2021 I think arranger Bob Freedman (since deceased I believe) deserves a big shout out for "Hot House Flowers." Quote
