mikeweil Posted July 25, 2018 Report Posted July 25, 2018 (edited) I thought it might be a good idea to collect links to discographies of jazz musicians spread over the internet, thoroughly researched ones that is. I got the idea earlier today when receiving an e-mail from the Darmstadt Jazz Institute linking to two files with the chronology and discography of Lee Morgan - the author has written a biography and wanted to update the listings in the book. Attention: clicking these links will open a download window for the pdf files: https://www.press.umich.edu/pdf/leemorgan_chronology.pdf https://www.press.umich.edu/pdf/9780472115020-Discography.pdf The book on the publisher's site: https://www.press.umich.edu/132323/delightfulee/?s=supplemental_materials More to come - please feel free to post your recommendations. mikeweil Posted July 25, 2018 Author Report Posted July 25, 2018 (edited) In this case, a subscription to the Tom Lord discography site would be worth considering .... Rust covers recordings up to 1942. The listings on https://www.jazzdisco.org/ have to be taken with a grain of salt. Compare their Wes Montgomery disco, e.g., with the one Noal Cohen just finished, linked on https://jazzdiscography.com - these are some of the best and most elaborate. Rust will include Hawkins recordings up to the recording ban in 1942. Jean-Francois Villetard did a two volume discography of Hawkins covering through 1957. Not online as far as I can tell. Quote

Also, the discography is album-based, rather than session-based -- since I didn't have access to those details. Despite those shortcomings, it may be useful to some folks. Quote

EKE BBB Posted August 1, 2018 Report Posted August 1, 2018 (edited) * David Pamquist's The Duke - Where And When ("TDWAW") website goes far beyond a simple discography, trying to provide a complete chronicle of Duke Ellington's life. Anyway, it is worth spending a few thousands of hours just navigating through this endless source of information or checking some specific gig, date or recording. Long life David! Shrdlu Posted December 31, 2018 Report Posted December 31, 2018 It isn't hard to chase up Bean's recordings manually, so zu sagen. Recommendations: his three sessions with Kenny Burrell for Prestige (especially "Tres Palabras") and his Impulse albums from the 60s, "Wrapped Tight", with its gorgeous version of "Intermezzo" being the last one.
