Shawn Posted May 24, 2018 Report Posted May 24, 2018 Recently I've started getting back into all the Blue Note records after taking an extended (roughly 10 year) break. It's been a joy, but one thing I had forgotten about were all the gospel-inspired gems. Listening to Freddie Roach's 'Wine, Wine, Wine" started me searching for more of the Baptist Beat. So, what are some of your favorite examples of this subgenre? It doesn't have to be Blue Note. Quote

Dan Gould Posted May 24, 2018 Report Posted May 24, 2018 About three years ago I was inspired to put together a comp I labelled "Gospel Jazz" - wish I'd thought of Baptist Beat as the title instead - two discs worth but I didn't save a playlist but I do enjoy this style a great deal. Is it OK to reference explicitly gospel tunes performed by jazz musicians? Then: Battle Hymn of The Republic, by Gene Harris with Stanley Turrentine, on Gene Harris Trio + 1 Just a Closer Walk With Thee, 20th Concord Festival All-Stars (The Ray Brown Trio with Red Holloway and Sweets Edison, Gene really tears it up) Quote

danasgoodstuff Posted May 25, 2018 Report Posted May 25, 2018 As far as I can tell, nothing quite like this before it. Dec '61 Quote
Milestones Posted May 25, 2018 Report Posted May 25, 2018 (edited) I think Donald Byrd's A New Perspective would fit into this category, as well as some other individual tracks by Byrd such as "Pentacostal" (as above), "Chant," and "Great God." Edited May 25, 2018 by Milestones Quote
JSngry Posted May 25, 2018 Report Posted May 25, 2018 Can we do Pentecostal/Holy Roller Beat? If so, Mingus, Wednesday Night. Quote
