mikeweil Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 (edited) R,I,P, One of those unsung jazz greats who never played a bad note and always found the perfect notes to play, in good taste and spirit. All of the many Prestige dates he did as a sideman in the 1960's are worth listening to, but his two LPs worth as a leader still has some tracks unissued and never was on CD. He came a long way, starting with Charlie Singleton's band in 1949, Lester Young in the early 1950's, Julius Watkins' band Les Jazz Modes, accompanist for Jon Hendricks and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross/Bavan, settling in California and playing for many singers, Lorez Alexandria in particular. His only other recrding as a leader was an LP for Interplay in 1990. To me, he was the perfect tasteful modern jazz pianist. Edited May 20, 2018 by mikeweil Quote
soulpope Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 A fine piano player for sure .... R.I.P .... Quote
king ubu Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 Sad news. Was he actually still performing? Took me quite a while to get his qualities ... but yes, fine player. The Prestiges are herewith officially delegated to Fresh Sound for reissue (or are they too late for that? Fegh Disney fehg The Beatles fegh the Jacko heirs fegh el tupé!) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 RIP. I'd suppose not too many pianists of his school and generation are left. Quote
JSngry Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 I've never known anybody else with the names of Gildo and/ Mahones, alone or together. First heard him here (w/Pony Poindexter in tow as well).: Never knew too much about his except that he seemed to get called for a certain type of record dates, and always seemd to deliver. RIP. Quote
sgcim Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 RIP. I was playing at a NY jazz club years ago, and I met his ex-wife hangin' at the bar. Quote
Clunky Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 RIP . I know his work best from Booker Ervin’s The Blues Book. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 21, 2018 Report Posted May 21, 2018 RIP - Great with Booker, Watkins and LH&R. Always regret not picking up that Prestige ‘Soulful Piano’ 2LP when I found a copy. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted May 21, 2018 Report Posted May 21, 2018 Here are a couple more sessions with Gildo Mahones. Quote
Justin V Posted May 23, 2018 Report Posted May 23, 2018 I like his sideman work that I've heard. I'd often Google him to see if there was any news on him when I'd hear him. Thank you for the music, Mr. Mahones, and rest in peace. Quote
