I picked up a double Charlie Parker LP on Columbia, and the sound could politely be described as "archival."  I couldn't get through one side of the LP, as the tone of the alto was like a dentist's drill.

So I take off the LP, try to put it back in the sleeve, and I notice something was getting in the way.

I pull out this crazy collage that has a combination of cutout images from 70s German porn mags and part of a Playboy article on EST, which, as you may remember, was a 70s self-help program with elements of a religious cult.

I felt that this was a perfect encapsulation of jazz's audience in the 1970s. ;)

I imagine the previous owner playing Fender bass with Maynard Ferguson, wearing a powder-blue polyester tux, aviator-frame glasses, mutton chop sideburns, and long, greasy hair awkwardly parted on one side, the kind of guy you would see on the Newlywed Game.

What are some cool things that you have found inside of used LPs?

But what's a "load"?

I don't know but it reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer is showing how he arranges his money clip with the biggest denomination on the outside and Jerry replies 'It's a $5".

Once while going through a pile of LP's that the customer told us had belonged to his late son, we found a small envelope of weed tucked into a gatefold cover. Unfortunately, it had lost its potency over the years.

Not an LP, but the cd reissue of Ornette's Crisis/a 12. I was at an Exchange location n was gonna buy it, but the cd was gone and in its place was this packet of fake nipples. I took it to the front desk and they laughed n I got to keep the empty case/inserts and the packet of fake nipples for free;  my 20 yr old daughter who was with me at the time asked for the nips. Awkwardly, I gave them to her...weirdest experience ever!

Inside a copy of the Prestige album by Sonny Stitt, Black Vibrations, which features Leon Spencer on organ:

There is both a form typed letter dated from June of 1972 and and  a handwritten note from Leon Spencer to Jim.

The form letter is soliciting work in a club. "Shortly thereafter [his third album being released on Prestige/Fantasy at the end of July] I will be making a swing through your area. I will be available for engagements in your club and that area."

The handwritten note to Jim states: In addition to this album (Louisiana Slim) and the one by Sonny Stitt (Black Vibrations) I have recorded ten other albums with and recent releases with Lou Donaldson, Gene Ammons, Rusty Bryant and Melvin Sparks. If the question is who have I ever played with and behind; ... Peggy Lee, Lou Rawls, Hank Crawford, Liberace and The Sister's Love. That should be enough. My new album is really something else and I'll send it to you in plenty of time for publicity. I'll need to hear from [you] with a week or week and a half. Awaiting your reply, Organist Leon Spencer Jr. [Houston phone number]

Inside, I think, "Don't misunderstand" by Etta Jones & Houston Person - a NEW copy - I found a photo of an approximately contemporary Houston Person band, with Jimmy Lewis, Jimmy Ponder, a white drummer I don't recognise (though I may have done back in 2007). No sign of a pianist or organist - probably there but out of shot. It was done in a restaurant with the word 'lobster' in the outside of the glass window behind the band. The recording was made at "Salt peanuts" NY. Don't know if this matches that place.

I got it from Amazon UK. Strange thing to find in a new CD.

No, I just held the photo against the CD. It must have been inside an LP. Dunno which.

Sonny Stitt AND Liberace, what a pro! That is a cool find.

Inside a NEW copy of Fela Kuti's "Authority stealing', on the Kalakuta llabel (Fela's own), I bought at HMV in 1983, there's a propaganda broadsheet called YAP News, which I think means Young African Pioneers. It's said to be the text of evidence given to the Irikefe Crude Oil Sales Tribunal by Fela.

The LP has a fault at the end of side 2. Printed on the sleeve, as part of the artwork, is an apology for the slight technical fault "due to This recording under Economic and cultural stress in our country". Something else I've never seen elsewhere :)

Not an LP, but my wife's aunt bought a cheap $10 purse in the local Marshals, when visiting us from Europe. Inside - $1600 in cash...

I can only assume that someone bought the purse, went out with it, then returned it, forgetting to take out the money. Pound-foolish indeed.
