This company sells what appear to be high quality vinyl reissues of classic albums. I've been eyeing the 3 Nick Drake albums lately and am veeeerrrrry, very tempted.

Has anyone heard the reissues put out by this company? Are they worth picking up? If so, is there a good source for these here in the US?

Thanks!

Appearances can be deceiving.

SV's quality is a coin toss, imho, that's why I stay away from their reissues.

I don't know about the Nick Drake in particular, but here's the opinion of someone who does -

  Quote
Michael Fremer [stereophile v23, n2, p36-37] , "I sat down the other night and compared the new Simply Vinyl reissues to an original pink-label {Free] Fire and Water, an original "sunray" [John Martyn] Solid Air, and a later, orange-and-blue label [Nick Drake] Bryter Layter. Tonally, the reissues are all very honest renderings of the originals. But -and it's a big one- all three LP's were spatially flat and sounded kind of "thick", with none of the focus, air, fine detail, and resolution found on my originals (or, in the case of the Drake, a third pressing). And those particular attributes are what I (and, I suspect, you) prefer about analog!

...Now that the market has been muddied with vinyl cut from who knows what, how likely is it that someone else will take a shot at those [80-odd titles in the Simply Vinyl catalog] using certified original tapes? That's why I have a problem with Simply Vinyl."

I stayed away from these, too. It was easy since I did not want or already had many of their titles. Try Redtrumpet.com . He might be able to point you in right direction.

Their stuff stinks. Dylan Unplugged sounds like an MP-3. Vinyl reissues are one of the biggest areas of marketing abuse I know of in the music industry. If they are not talking about the source material and the chain of treatment, forget it. That is what you pay for.
