I've got all of Woody's live High-Note releases, and the even more obscure Trumpet Guild thing of more live Woody material (super-similar to the High-Notes, might as well be vol. 5), and damn near every thing else ever available with/by Woody -- but this new one has to rank up there with the very best of the very best. Crystal clear sound (better than all the High-Notes, if I'm remembering them right), and phenomenal playing by the entire band. 4 long tunes, clocking in a little over 70 minutes. The material has only been issued to the market many years after Shaw's early passing, but we'd easily rank this with some of our favorite classics by the trumpeter – and we hope you'll agree after hearing the tunes "Katrina Ballerina", "To Kill A Brick", "Sunbath", and "Joshua C". Run, don't walk, if you have any interest in this one. I was a little on the fence (I've already got a ton of Woody, do I really need this?) -- but no buyer's remorse here, and worth every penny. Dusty seems to be out of stock in both formats (the CD was $16.99, iirc - can't remember what the vinyl was). Bunch of other titles in this series too -- Albert Collins, Dizzy, Griffin/Lockjaw, Hub, Elvin, Esther Phillips, and Johnny Guitar Watson (as of this posting). I picked this up in Shinjuku last year along with the Elvin Jones and Freddie Hubbard. Maybe the most aggressive Arthur Taylor I ever heard and he's high in the mix but I don't mind that. It's not the apostrophe that's decisive. The correct name and spelling is "Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall" (yes, with an "umlaut"). Popular success (beyond jazz circles) mostly came from Dixieland concerts (and made the club quite legendary throughout Germany in its time) but they did branch out into other jazz styles a lot.
