Just got a copy of this on CD from The Bastards a few days ago (and it's available as a double-LP too, for those so inclined) -- and OMG, is it ever good!!

I've got all of Woody's live High-Note releases, and the even more obscure Trumpet Guild thing of more live Woody material (super-similar to the High-Notes, might as well be vol. 5), and damn near every thing else ever available with/by Woody -- but this new one has to rank up there with the very best of the very best.  Crystal clear sound (better than all the High-Notes, if I'm remembering them right), and phenomenal playing by the entire band.  4 long tunes, clocking in a little over 70 minutes.

Cannot say enough good things about this one, and I can't wait for future volumes, if they're like this one.

Dusty blurb:  Late live Woody Shaw – completely on fire, and spinning things out with the soaring spiritual energy of his early 70s albums on Muse! The setting is fantastic – long tracks that not only let Shaw blow with non-stop imagination and soulful lyricism, but which also have room for a young Steve Turre to really find his voice on trumpet – in a lineup that also includes Mulgrew Miller on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Tony Reedus on drums – all players who sound even better here on record than they do on paper! The material has only been issued to the market many years after Shaw's early passing, but we'd easily rank this with some of our favorite classics by the trumpeter – and we hope you'll agree after hearing the tunes "Katrina Ballerina", "To Kill A Brick", "Sunbath", and "Joshua C".

Run, don't walk, if you have any interest in this one.  I was a little on the fence (I've already got a ton of Woody, do I really need this?) -- but no buyer's remorse here, and worth every penny.  Dusty seems to be out of stock in both formats (the CD was $16.99, iirc - can't remember what the vinyl was).

Bunch of other titles in this series too -- Albert Collins, Dizzy, Griffin/Lockjaw, Hub, Elvin, Esther Phillips, and Johnny Guitar Watson (as of this posting).  All with similar covers (and a bunch of them are 2 CD's each, I'm just now seeing -- but not all)...

Hopefully there'll be more in this series, both another volume of material from Woody -- but others too, by other leaders.

There is more material available from this concert (it was taped in it`s entirety by German Radio NDR) - so we can really live in hope for Vol 2 .....

Looks like they're not available on Spotify here in the U.S.

Damn - that’s a shame. Most of them are on there over here - Shaw, Diz, Hubbard, Baker, Johnny Guitar Watson.

The Diz is quite nice - nothing earthshattering but a good listen.

I was ready to blow off the Freddie, then saw Hadley Caliman was on it.

I went through the exact same two-step process!  I don't have a whole lot of Hadley, but what I've heard has piqued my interest.

FWIW, it seems the ones in this series that are 2CD, are 3LP sets...

https://www.discogs.com/label/1180955-NDR-Info

Also, Amazon has most of them (maybe all?) - some with a release date of April 20th (and some seemingly available now) - and some out of stock...

(Some have the apostrophe in the title, some don't -- so my search is just on "Onkel Carnegie Hall")

Hopefully they'll be more in this series!

I like the Griffin / Lockjaw 2 CD set - Montoliu, NHOP, Art Taylor

Me too.  I picked this up in Shinjuku last year along with the Elvin Jones and Freddie Hubbard.  Maybe the most aggressive Arthur Taylor I ever heard and he's high in the mix but I don't mind that.  I saw the Woody Shaw in the store but didn't get it.

I have had copies of the radio broadcast for years. If I can remember I will look for the set list in my archives.

It's not the apostrophe that's decisive. The correct name and spelling is "Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall" (yes, with an "umlaut"). Popular success (beyond jazz circles) mostly came from Dixieland concerts (and made the club quite legendary throughout Germany in its time) but they did branch out into other jazz styles a lot. "Pö" comes from "Pöseldorf", the name of the suburb of Hamburg where the hall was originally located.

The vinyl version comes with an extra track: "Diane" (13:12). Interestingly, the cover info locates this track on the C side, while it is actually part of the D side.
