J.A.W.
JRVG by a country mile. The huge increase in resolution, depth, tonality and sheer musicality leaves the mellow, fuzzy TOCJ's in the dust. I will admit, however, that people with poor digital and/or bright tweeters might prefer the rolled off, soft focus TOCJ's. The music is on the RVG's, that is closest to being in the studio. Couldn't disagree more - on my Mark Levinson-fed electrostatics with subwoofer most (J)RVGs sound as if they were recorded in the bathroom; like I said in my post above they have a narrow soundstage and very aggressive mid and high frequencies. They're sorely lacking in depth, tonality and musicality... Aren't these discussions fun... Edited March 8, 2004 by J.A.W.
AmirBagachelles
I think the avg TOCJ is a great product, consistent and neutral, even dare I say your money's worth at $25 a throw. Harsh JVRGs are not uncommon, especially unfortunate given Rudy's in-your ear/face recording style. Everybody on this board should try some of those VICJ 20-bit discs, they really are nice. I'm not sure if these were in that series, but almost anything sourced from Contemporary, issued in Japan in 20-bit 1997-2000 (jewel case or cardboard), is going to sound really good I believe. Go for the Art Peppers, Hampton Hawes, Sonny Rollins if you can.

I've got a lot of Victor VICJs, and I've never heard a bad one, on the contrary
