Kareem Abdul-Jabbar posted this photo on his Facebook page with the caption: "This photo of Thelonious Monk and me was taken March of 1966, I was 18. It was shot by the baroness Nica de Koenswater in the kitchen of the Village Vanguard which served as the green room for the musicians.

So he was 18, maybe a senior in HS or freshman at UCLA.  Didn't realize the jazz bug bit him that young.

Kareem was a senior in high school in March of 1966. He enrolled at UCLA in the fall of 1966.

Great foto. Well I also like "Evidence" a lot and love to play it, but as Monk has said when he was asked which of his songs he likes most "I haven´t rated them".

It´s great that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was such a big fan of jazz also. I remember in the book "Notes and Tones" Freddie Hubbard stated that "Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had called him...."

Evette Dorham Monk visited my childhood home often to see my dad Kenny Dorham. I remember him well. Ruby My Dear (my mom is also Ruby), and Round Midnight.
