ghost of miles Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 I was just thinking about this because I pulled my Bobby Hutcherson Select to use on the show today (for "Searchin' The Trane"). I really miss that series; the Hutcherson is one that I seem to return to every year or two. What were some of your favorites? Quote
gmonahan Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 I pull the Herman Philips down now and then. Also like the Brookmeyer. gregmo Quote
Misterioso Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 John Carter & Bobby Bradford, The Complete Revelation sessions, reissued by Jonathan Horwich himself for Mosaic. I love this set. Quote
Clunky Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 Oddly I probably play the Duke Pearson most often but I'd put the Andrew Hill as the most significant release in the series. Pendulum was the one that surprised me the most. I guess I'd an uniformed view that Liebman wasn't too great and wasn't expecting the set to be as good as it is. Since getting and digging the Pendulum set he has risen massively in my estimation. My error not his. Quote
mjzee Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 The Gerry Mulligan and Art Pepper sets are my favorites. I also love the Dizzy Reece, Carmell Jones, Big John Patton, Bobby Hutcherson and Dexter Gordon. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 Bobby Hutcherson (such a great set) and John Patton get the most plays. Honourable mentions to the Duke Pearson, Curtis Amy, Johnny Richards, Carmell J., Boogie Woogie Piano and Pacific Jazz Trios. Quote
T.D. Posted February 20, 2018 Report Posted February 20, 2018 Charles Tolliver (20), Denny Zeitlin, Andrew Hill (16), Randy Weston, Carmell Jones all get a lot of plays. I loved the series and was sorry to see it go. Quote
JSngry Posted February 21, 2018 Report Posted February 21, 2018 Akiyoshi/Tabackin, because Mosaic sent it to me in error and told me to keep it with their compliments, and also because I figured what the fuck, it's free and it's here, let's listen to it, and believe it or not, I gained a better ear for that music by doing so. But you know, the Moncur, that'sthe shit, that one is. As powerful a cogent a picture of a voice as a full-sized set, but with only threee CD. I also like how they put out all/as much Andrew Hill as they could to get him some bread before he passed. The one with the small groups, that's majestically psychedelic, all the places that music goes, almost goes, and sometimes just tries to go. I still think there's math to be done that makes that series viable. Not saying that the equation was wrong, just that maybe a different equation could be constructed, one with different and/or rearranged variables. Quote
paul secor Posted February 21, 2018 Report Posted February 21, 2018 For me, Bechet, Pepper, Carmell Jones, Moncur, and I'll include the Patton, because I'd barely heard him before I got his select. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 21, 2018 Report Posted February 21, 2018 #1 Andrew Hill (Blue Note) both Tollivers Sam Rivers Zeitlin Carmell I thInk I own about 15 other Selects, but those above get the most spins for me. BTW, here's a good list of the entire series (I think this is complete, or damn close). https://ehsankhoshbakht.blogspot.com/2010/04/discography-of-mosaic-select.html?m=1 Quote

mjazzg Posted February 21, 2018 Report Posted February 21, 2018 The Hill's the one for me. Also pleased I have the Hutcherson, Carter/Bradford and Tolliver (quartets).Moncur would be right up there but I had it all on LP so didn't jump wish I had the Rivers and Tolliver big bands Quote
BFrank Posted February 21, 2018 Report Posted February 21, 2018 That was a good series. Sorry to see it disappear. I agree with most of the ones already mentioned: Grachan, Big John, Carmell, Tolliver live, etc. Quote
felser Posted February 21, 2018 Report Posted February 21, 2018 (edited) Lots of them I appreciate and own, but the Tolliver's and the McCoy Tyner, are my favorite, and the John Handy and Grachan Moncur are great. Edited February 21, 2018 by felser Quote
John Tapscott Posted February 21, 2018 Report Posted February 21, 2018 Akiyoshi-Tabackin and Herman top the list because I'm a big band nut, but here's a few others I really enjoy - Paul Chambers (love that set), Gerry Mulligan, Denny Zeitlin, Johnny Richards, Art Pepper (great set) Quote
Brad Posted February 21, 2018 Report Posted February 21, 2018 Curtis Amy, Pacific Jazz Piano Trios and one I’d never thought I’d like, the Boogie Woogie set. Quote

mikeweil Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 I have a dozen of them, and like them all - perhaps it's the Onzy Mathews I grab the most often. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 Just wanted to say how phenomenal the San Rivers Florida Big Band set is. Those recordings, plus the single disc Aurora from 2006 (same band), all work WAY better for me than either of his two late 90's 'all-star' big band albums (the ones on RCA from France, iirc). His Florida big band was just killing, and I'm SO glad there's four hours of their exploits that got documented officially, with legit releases. They sound like if Arnold Schoenberg had led a big band, with James Brown's rhythm section. That shit's deep!! Quote

It's pretty easy to find, is still on CDBaby too (brand new), or Amazon. I've even seen a couple used copies in the last few years. It's every bit as good as the Select. Quote
