Lazaro Vega
Did you know soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom was the first musician commissioned by the NASA Art Program to create three original compositions (1989) and has a minor planet named after her (6083 Janeirabloom)? Did you know this Yale graduate (1977) and tenured music professor at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music is married to the actor/director Joe Grifasi? Yeah man, she’s way hip. Friday night’s edition of Jazz From Blue Lake featured Jane Ira Bloom’s music in the first part of each hour and is at Blue Lake Public Radio’s on-demand page until tomorrow. Chuck Nessa
Do you know of a fantastic recording of her?
Larry Kart
Some nice ones but nothing that I recall as fantastic.
JSngry
I always liked "Rapture Of The Flat" from Modern Drama. It's goofy for no real reason. The rest of her shit sounds, like, really "serious" to me. Such is her calling, but she appears to have had a real gift for goofy that went unengaged. paul secor
I've always liked Mighty Lights (Enja) with Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell. I heard that band play live a couple of times.
Milestones
"Lost in the Stars" from Mighty Lights is as good as it gets in ballad playing--just stunning.
kh1958
I haven't heard her latest one but the two prior recordings, Sixteen Sunsets and Wingwalker, are my favorites by her.

Agreed--that's actually the track I used to represent her in this Night Lights show (it starts about 47:20 or -11:40 into the program): Jazz Women Of The 1980s
mikeweil
I've seen her perform a few times, have almost all of her recordings, and think she has one of the most beautiful soprano sounds around.

I think Bloom's strength is her ballad playing. One of my favorite recordings by Bloom is "The Red Quartets" with Fred Hersch on piano, Mark Dresser on bass, and Bobby Previte on drums. Most of the tracks can be found on youtube, including this beautiful ballad:
Lazaro Vega
Her version of "The Nearness of You" with Julian Priester and Kenny Wheeler does it for me.
Д.Д.
Just listened to her "Early Americans" album (trio with Mark Helias and Bobby Previte), I think it is just great and the production is fantastic.
