duaneiac Posted December 12, 2018 Report Posted December 12, 2018 A super compilation with a weak album cover. The Impressions version of "Silent Night" is both danceably groovy and sincerely reverent at the same time and the two Otis Redding tracks are among his very finest performances. Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted December 13, 2018 Report Posted December 13, 2018 I've always liked this one.... Quote
duaneiac Posted December 13, 2018 Report Posted December 13, 2018 It took a long time to find an affordable copy of this disc, but i found a still sealed copy at a reasonable price this year. Johnny Costa, the pianist from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, recorded this CD back in 1996 it looks like. Good swinging performances and one tune ("Kingly Gifts") was even co-written by Mr. Rogers! duaneiac Posted December 13, 2018 Report Posted December 13, 2018 An entertaining array of holiday music from such performers as Irma Thomas, the Louvin Brothers, NRBQ, Charles Brown, David Grisman, Brave Combo, George Thorogood and Joseph Spence. Quote
duaneiac Posted December 13, 2018 Report Posted December 13, 2018 The best gypsy jazz styled Christmas album I've found. Quote

duaneiac Posted December 14, 2018 Report Posted December 14, 2018 (edited) I've always loved this song. I'm surprised more singers have not recorded it. Gerry Mulligan recorded his own vocal version of this song many years later. I heard that version before I even knew about the existence of this one. Learning about this recording by the two of them makes that later recording all the more poignant. Edited December 17, 2018 by duaneiac Quote
duaneiac Posted December 15, 2018 Report Posted December 15, 2018 I especially liked their version of "The Chipmunk Song". Quote
duaneiac Posted December 15, 2018 Report Posted December 15, 2018 This disc always gets a listen each year. Quote

Tom 1960 Posted December 15, 2018 Report Posted December 15, 2018 A definite change of pace when it comes to Christmas music. Quote
duaneiac Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 This disc also includes 4 tracks by Bill Doggett interspersed among the Charles Brown tracks. When I first got this CD decades ago, I thought those Doggett tracks were kind of cheesy, but now I have come to enjoy them. Holiday music from the likes of Solomon Burke, George Jones & Tammy Wynette, Rufus Thomas, Foghat, Huey Piano Smith and little Augie Rios among others. Quote
