clifford_thornton Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 He was one of the greats. For me a formative influence on listening to this music. RIP, and thank you sir. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 He was such an interesting player when I got a chance to see him live. He will be missed. Quote
mjazzg Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 that's a great shame. Always enjoyed what he played in whatever context I've only just, yesterday, ordered the "Call It Art" box as a Xmas present to self - it will be a poignant listen now Quote
sidewinder Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 Very sad news - RIP. Never got to see him but hugely enjoyed his work with Shepp and Carla Bley. His booklet notes for the Herbie Nichols Mosaic were superb too. Quote
JSngry Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 Ouch. Totally seemed to be a person of honor. RIP, you will indeed be missed. Quote
paul secor Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 It's very sad to read this. Mr. Rudd was/is one of my favorite musicians. I heard him play live several times, beginning in 1968, and he never lost that beautiful tone and his sense of adventure. I had the opportunity to speak with him after two of the gigs and had the impression that I was speaking with a kind, open person, He made our world a better place. Thank you, Mr. Rudd. You'll be missed. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 It appears that Rudd was another man who lost the battle with prostate cancer: http://downbeat.com/news/detail/roswell-rudd-feted-at-82nd-birthday-bash To all the men over 45 reading this, make sure to get a baseline PSA and don't fear the finger. Joe Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 A true gentleman and scholar. His notes to the Herbie Nichols Mosaic set... Goodbye and thanks for all the music. Quote
king ubu Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 Very sad news indeed - maybe my favourite 'bone player if I had to name one. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 Wow, this is sad news. Dizzy’s club in nyc just had a birthday celebration for him. Roswell was in the audience. RIP, Roswell. Quote

Stereojack Posted December 22, 2017 Report Posted December 22, 2017 A marvelous musician whose ears were always wide open. I got to see him with Shepp in 1966 or 67, and had the pleasure of meeting him 40 years later when he was staying at a friend's house while in town for a gig. A nice fellow and a beautiful musical spirit. Quote
GA Russell Posted December 23, 2017 Report Posted December 23, 2017 Roswell Rudd passed away last night after a valiant, spirited fight with the emperor of all maladies. We were honored to be introduced to Roswell by Jamie Saft in 2015, which lead to us working with him in releasing Strength & Power (with Jamie Saft, Trevor Dunn and Balazs Pandi), and then, under the auspices of his partner, producer Verna Gillis, Embrace (with Fay Victor, Lafayette Harris and Ken Filiano). Two only apparently polar works of art, united by the exquisite voice, sensitivity, humanity and boundless curiosity of Roswell. May his voice resonate in perpetuity. We all at RareNoise are close to his partner Verna and their family in these very testing times. RareNoise Quote

It could prolong your life. I got a colonoscopy @ 50 and was found to be pre-cancerous and had it dealt with then. Have had four more since then, and am glad I did. Sorry for the loss of Mr. Rudd, who made some really interesting music, especially those Freedom albums in the 70's. Quote
Pim Posted December 23, 2017 Report Posted December 23, 2017 Rest in peace mr. Rudd. I have always loved your work, especially with Archie Shepp. Wonderful trombonist and a wonderful man. This was my summer vacation soundtrack when I visited Tibet and Mongolia last summer. Quote
JohnS Posted December 23, 2017 Report Posted December 23, 2017 Very sad news, another major figure gone. Caught him with Archie Shepp a handful of times. A knockout band. Enjoyed a lot of his work especially that with Steve Lacy. Quote
sgcim Posted December 23, 2017 Report Posted December 23, 2017 A trumpet player friend of mine used to play 'the mountains' with him in a band back in the 60s and 70s, when there were still gigs. RIP. Quote
Clunky Posted December 24, 2017 Report Posted December 24, 2017 Sad news, he was a fine musician with a quality legacy of recordings. RIP Quote
CJ Shearn Posted December 24, 2017 Report Posted December 24, 2017 RIP very sad. His last 2 albums were fantastic Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 25, 2017 Report Posted December 25, 2017 loved him, love him, will always love him. One of the great human beings. Quote
