paul secor Posted December 9, 2017 Report Posted December 9, 2017 A variation on the Desert Island Discs Theme; If your collection of recordings was destroyed, which would be the first ten you'd want to replace? My choices: Mingus Ah Um Louis: Complete Hot 5's and 7's Billie: Lady Day Cecil: Looking Ahead Bird: Complete Savoy Studio Recordings Complete Port of Harlem Jazzmen Ornette: Golden Circle Vol. 1 Monk's Music Rev. Robert Wilkins - Piedmont LP The Best of Muddy Waters I wasn't surprised at what I chose, except for what I left out - no Ellington, Trane (except with Monk), Rolliins, Pres (except with Billie), Miles, Bud, Ayler, and others, including some rarities by lesser known musicians. But these are the first ten I'd want to replace. And, hey, perhaps no one wants to thinks about replacing their collection. I just thought it might be an interesting subject. Quote
JSngry Posted December 9, 2017 Report Posted December 9, 2017 How old would I be when this happened? How old and how senile? Because if time is short and I can remember most of it already, I'm not feeling a real rush, and might well benefit from the silence. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 9, 2017 Report Posted December 9, 2017 I might take Ellington Victors 1927-1934. I could recreate everything else from there. Quote
xybert Posted December 9, 2017 Report Posted December 9, 2017 To keep it simple (including sticking to jazz only), i kind of just want to say: i'd get 4 x 1st Great Quintet, 5 x 2nd Great Quintet and Coltrane's My Favourite Things. That would keep me going for a while. My Favourite Things would be first, totally my go to album. It's just too hard trying to single out an Ornette/Monk/Ellington/Bud/ etc album. Having said that, i'd get Mingus Ah Um, Sunday at the Village Vanguard, The Amazing Bud Powells pretty quickly. Masterpieces By Ellington is also a go to. Quote

soulpope Posted December 10, 2017 Report Posted December 10, 2017 (edited) Limiting this here to jazz music ....: Result as of today, but I`m a fickle chap .... Edit : In case some of the forementioned wasn`t readily available I would strongly consider this one .... : Edited December 10, 2017 by soulpope Quote
Peter Friedman Posted December 10, 2017 Report Posted December 10, 2017 Here is my list today. Next week, month or year it might look slightly different. Charlie Parker - Complete Savoy & Dial Studio Recordings Count Basie (with some great Pres) - America's #1 Band Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners Stan Getz - Serenity Miles Davis - Milestones Horace Silver - Song For My father Tommy Flanagan - Beyond The Bluebird Barry Harris - Magnificent Sonny Clark - Cool Struttin' Left out numerous favorites due to limitation of ten. Quote
jeffcrom Posted December 11, 2017 Report Posted December 11, 2017 In kinda chronological order: King Oliver's 1923 Creole Jazz Band sides (Preferably the Off The Record issue. Well, really, preferably the original 78s, but I've only got three of those now.) Can I do boxes? I have the IRD Complete Bix Beiderbecke set - I would probably use my misfortune as excuse to upgrade to a more recent complete Bix box. The Louis Armstrong Hot Fives and Sevens, or at least the stuff with Earl Hines. A collection of Charlie Parker's Dial sides. Duke Ellington - The Great Paris Concert Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come Miles Davis - Miles Smiles John Coltrane - Meditations Anthony Braxton - Creative Orchestra Music Steve Lacy - 5 x Monk 5 x Lacy Jeez - no Ayler, no Sonny Rollins, no Roscoe Mitchell, no Monk, no Lester Young, no Jelly Roll. Limiting it to ten is painful. And that's just jazz. I listen to other things, too. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted December 14, 2017 Report Posted December 14, 2017 I will listen to the waves lapping the shore. Too much music to limit it to 10 CD's. Can they be 10 Blu Ray 2 layer disc so that can be 50 gb each? That way more music can be included. Quote
HutchFan Posted December 15, 2017 Report Posted December 15, 2017 Here's what today's list might look like -- if I limited myself to JAZZ only (and no huge box sets): - Duke Ellington - The Best of Duke Ellington: 1932-1939 (Sony) - Bobby Hutcherson - Medina/Spiral (Blue Note) - Mal Waldron - One-Upmanship (Enja) - Dave Liebman/Richie Beirach - Forgotten Fantasies (A&M Horizon) - Randy Weston - The Spirits of Our Ancestors (Antilles) - Miles - Bitches Brew (Sony) - Thelonious - TM Big Band & Quartet in Concert (Sony) - Jaki Byard - Solo/Strings (Prestige) - Mingus - Mingus at Antibes (Atlantic) - Larry Willis with Cecil McBee & Gary Bartz - Steal Away (Audioquest) Of course, so many are missing. Picking ten is tough! But I LOVE these ten like you love your best friend, your mama's cooking, your childhood dog. Quote
