LWayne Posted November 6, 2017 Report Posted November 6, 2017 I have many CDs where he has been a sideman. Always enjoyed his interactions; particularly with Steve Lehman Octet. Since he has deservedly gained a lot of publicity recently, my question is where to start in his recorded catalogue as a leader? "Verisimilitude" seems to be pretty esoteric from the samples I have heard. Any recommendations? Thanks, LWayne Quote
jcam_44 Posted November 6, 2017 Report Posted November 6, 2017 Koan, though i think the cd is out of print is excellent. Stranded island short list album for me. Quote
jlhoots Posted November 6, 2017 Report Posted November 6, 2017 Paradoxical Frog - technically it's a cooperative with Kris Davis & Ingrid Laubrock. Quote
Olie Brice Posted November 6, 2017 Report Posted November 6, 2017 'Versimilitude' is amazing, definitely my favorite Sorey as a leader so far. Takes a bit of time to absorb... Quote
ctuck1 Posted November 7, 2017 Report Posted November 7, 2017 (edited) This one (Inner Spectrum of Variables) is pretty special: https://pirecordings.com/album/pi65 Takes awhile to digest, but well worth it. Edited November 7, 2017 by ctuck1 Quote

mjazzg Posted September 15, 2022 Report Posted September 15, 2022 Another new one from Sorey, on Pi, quartet playing standards amongst others. Following in Braxton's footsteps? https://tyshawn-sorey.bandcamp.com/album/the-off-off-broadway-guide-to-synergism?from=fanpub_fb Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted September 15, 2022 Report Posted September 15, 2022 (edited) Pillars is my favorite by a good bit. One pre-pandemic and the other earlier this year. At the show earlier this year Greg Osby played a fine alto saxophone with a good straight ahead bassist (who did not once use his bow:() and a decent but flowery pianist. Osby never exploded the music so I came away disappointed. I didn’t stay for the second set as I knew what I’d hear so no “sound of surprise” which is still what I’m looking for at live shows. Very good but nothing like a few years back with Mary Halvorson & Jon Irabagon as one of a few examples of seeing Tyshawn & band mates destroy the room. kh1958 Posted September 15, 2022 Report Posted September 15, 2022 (edited) He is scheduled for three concerts at the Big Ears Festival. Tyshawn Sorey Trio with Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell. With the Vijay Iyer Trio, with Linda Oh. And in a trio led by saxophonist (new to me) Zoh Amba (with Thomas Morgan). Previous Edited September 15, 2022 by kh1958 Quote
mjazzg Posted September 15, 2022 Report Posted September 15, 2022 I watched a stream from the VV, I think, during Covid of that trio with Lovano and Frisell. It was excellent and very definitely a tribute to their work with Motian Zoh Amba is interesting, I'm not completely convinced by the one album I have by her Quote
jlhoots Posted September 15, 2022 Report Posted September 15, 2022 (edited) I really like Mesmerism. I don't always need squealing & squalling to enjoy the music. This new 3 CD set looks intriguing (to me). Edited September 16, 2022 by jlhoots Quote
Rabshakeh Posted September 15, 2022 Report Posted September 15, 2022 I enjoyed the one Zoh Amba that I have heard. FJB gave her a bit push recently for some reason. Quote

BFrank Posted September 16, 2022 Report Posted September 16, 2022 Will keep an eye out for that. And definitely hope to catch at least one of his shows at Big Ears. Quote

Rabshakeh Posted September 5, 2023 Report Posted September 5, 2023 What's happened to Sorry recently? It feels like his pace has slowed quite a bit and he has moved more towards jazz releases (that don't really move me) and away from his compositional stuff. Quote
T.D. Posted September 5, 2023 Report Posted September 5, 2023 I noticed (to my surprise) that he and Conrad Tao performed Morton Feldman's Triadic Memories at the 2023 Bang on a Can Long Play Festival (NYC). Quote
