Chuck Nessa Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 I have been informed he passed on Sunday, October 29. Quote
HutchFan Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 I am very sorry to hear this news. He was a leader indeed. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 (edited) Crushing loss. I spent scarce little time with the man, but he left an indelible mark on my creative sensibility. The week or so he spent at Mills a little under ten years ago was one of the formative educational experiences of my entire life. I will absolutely never forget the duo concert he played with Roscoe the last night, which still figures among the most exciting nights of music I've ever had the privilege of experiencing. Talk about a life changing life. Thank you for absolutely everything, sir. Edited November 1, 2017 by ep1str0phy Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 God damn. No words but thanks. Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 Very sorry to hear this--just pulled out the Black Saint/Soul Note set and some of the Delmarks for revisiting. Such an incredible artist. Quote
medjuck Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 RIP. He seemed full of life when I saw him in Ojai this Spring with Roscoe Mitchell. Quote
JohnS Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 The sad news keeps coming. Fortunately I did get to see him in London leading a terrific nine or ten piece group. Memorable. Quote
Pim Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 Rip. A true innovator he was. Thanks for everything me. Abrams! Quote
OliverM Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 Another great one leaves this world. Quote
paul secor Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 Truly sad news. Thanks, Mr. Abrams. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 Felt so lucky to have seen him rehearse and conduct an orchestra of some of the finest New York musicians last winter over two or three days. Truly a tremendous experience. Quote
Dmitry Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 Tell us more! Was that a recording session? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 Not that I'm aware of; the hope, I think, was that this would grow into a larger performance of Abrams' music but it never came to pass. They were open rehearsals, free for anyone who RSVPed. Pretty damn amazing. Saw Muhal a few other times, all wonderful but nothing like that. Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 RIP. A giant. I discovered a lot of his music over the past two years. Quote
BeBop Posted November 1, 2017 Report Posted November 1, 2017 Very sorry to hear this. Another significant loss to the art. RIP. Quote
