Andy McGhee, RIP

Tenor saxophonist and educator Andy McGhee has left us at age 89.  Just saw a death notice in the Boston Globe. 

He played with Lionel Hampton for about six years.

 

McGHEE, Andrew Renowned Jazz Artist & Former Professor Berklee School of Music Age 89, died in Marietta, GA, on Thursday, October 12, 2017 of natural causes. Receiving of friends and funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2017 in the Chapel of Forrest Hills Cemetery with military honors. Mr. McGhee was a former Professor at Berklee. West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory, Marietta, GA is in charge of arrangements.

First heard him with Woody Herman, then, at greater length, with Hamp.

Cat was a player. RIP.

I remember seeing Andy McGhee with Woody's band here in Toronto. It was interesting to hear Andy's big-toned tenor in Woody's "Four Brothers" reed section. Somehow it worked out very well.

I enjoy his work on Alan Dawson's Waltzin' with Flo, an album I highly recommend, but I didn't know much about him.  I'll have to check out more of his work.  Thank you for the music and your contributions as an educator, Mr. McGhee, and rest in peace.

Sorry to hear this. Andy was a great guy. Have wonderful memories of lunch at Legal Seafood with Andy and Griff when we would play in Boston.
