wesbed Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 In this edition, Carmell Jones. I know how to pronounce the ‘Jones’ part of his name. But, how is ‘Carmell’ pronounced? I mean, does it rhyme with the candy, as in caramel? Or, since there is a double-L at the end, is the accent on the ‘mell’ part of the name? Quote
Bill Fenohr Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 I don't know if its correct, but i have always pronounced it with the accent on the mell. Ive been pronouncing that way since the 60's, so it would be tough to change now. Quote
J Larsen Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 Jutta Hipp Is it Jut-ta, You-ta, or Yut -Ta? Quote
alankin Posted March 10, 2003 Report Posted March 10, 2003 Wasn't there some website that had a list of jazz musician pronunciations? It might have been on a radio station web site. Anyone remember? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 (edited) I have a couple of tips for Roscoe Mitchell fans with composition pronounciation troubles. Nonaah, a composition and DB Critics Poll album of the year winner is a 3 syllable word - No Nay Ah. That album contains a composition called A1TAL2A. This is a combo of Roscoe's daughter's name (Atala) and the numbers 1 & 2 - say " A-1 Tall Toola. Atala Mitchell is the young lady on the cover of Snurdy McGurdy, indeed she IS Snurdy McGurdy. Understand the photo was taken in 1981 and she has grown into a stunningly beautiful dancer. Edited March 11, 2003 by Chuck Nessa Quote
JSngry Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 Chuck, could you provide similar assistance for Anthony Braxton titles? Quote
James Posted March 11, 2003 Report Posted March 11, 2003 I've wondered for the longest time about the pronunciation of Martial Solal's name. Anybody? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Chuck, could you provide similar assistance for Anthony Braxton titles? Jim, don't the titles just roll off your calculator? Quote

Aggie87 Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Anyone care to take a stab at Michael Cuscuna's name then? Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Rhymes with "goose tuna" Now THAT'S information! I always thought was "Cuss - Koona". Although, I suppose the double "S" would have been built into it, eh? Anybody know of a good deal on a calcamoolator? I done rolled one Braxton album too many offa mine and it done broke. Quote
James Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 I've tried asking the pronunciation of Martial Solal's name on another bulletin board with no luck also. No one knows? Quote
mikeweil Posted March 12, 2003 Report Posted March 12, 2003 Try Marr-cee-ull Sou-lull, that comes closest. French isn't easy for you American folks . I once saw Carmell Jones with an Afro-Jazz Group very popular here in Germany at the time, Mombasa, founded and led by trombonist Lou Blackburn (another ex-Californian transplanted to Germany), and Lou always said Car-mell, with no recogizable accent on either syllable. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Please notice Mike's "tap dance" for the French pronounciation. I buy it, though I have said Mar-shal for the first name, but I'm a language limited American. Quote
James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 (edited) Thanks, Mike. I'm assuming it would be accented thusly: Mar-cee-ull' So'-lull (and thanks for you input, also Chuck...............) Edited March 13, 2003 by James Quote
Aggie87 Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Thanks Chuck. Actually, I was wondering whether it was MY-kull or mih-KILE Quote
mikeweil Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 (edited) James, the accents are both on the last syllable. Now I won't torture you with the correct pronunciation of my full first name, Michael, in German, as "ch" is a sibilant not that often used in English, as in machine, Mee'chu-ell (u as in "run", ell like the Spanish article). Thanks to a pm of a fellow boarder the tap dancer looks real sharp now ... B) ... he reminds of a German comedian/actor very popular in the 1960's, Heinz Erhardt, who's probably unknown outside of Germany. August 5, 2003 edit: This, of course, does not apply to the rotating girl at the side - I change my avatar every now and then. Edited August 5, 2003 by mikeweil Quote
michel devos Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 I've tried asking the pronunciation of Martial Solal's name on another bulletin board with no luck also. No one knows? try mar-sial so-lal that's it... Quote
James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Thanks, Mike & Michel! BTW, mikeweil - you'll never "torture" me with German pronunciation. My Mom is German. Quote
James Posted March 13, 2003 Report Posted March 13, 2003 Daniel A. poses a good question. More that one person has told me that it can be either: Moe' tee uhn or Moe' shun. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 14, 2003 Report Posted March 14, 2003 I understand he is of Armenian descent, so it should be Moe-tseeun, but he said in an interview he takes it as a compliment if it rhymes with motion. Quote
