CJ Shearn Posted June 13, 2017 Report Posted June 13, 2017 Great for Pat! Saw him Saturday night at the Beacon Theater. Great new quartet. Great for Joanne and Diane Reeves too. Quote
paul secor Posted June 13, 2017 Report Posted June 13, 2017 Congratulations to the winners. That said, I can't help but say that people like Roswell Ruud, Roscoe Mitchell, Andrew Cyrille, and Louis Hayes are at least as much, and in my opinion, much more deserving than any people who were honored this year. I guess that I'm just part of the yearly complaining. Previous thread: Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 13, 2017 Report Posted June 13, 2017 Agreed, Paul. The continuing omission of Mitchell is especially galling. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted June 13, 2017 Report Posted June 13, 2017 Roscoe's new ECM album due at the end of the month is really fantastic. I love how he uses the four trios separately and all together, especially with various people playing the AEOC's percussion instruments. Quote

BeBop Posted June 13, 2017 Report Posted June 13, 2017 Todd Barkan. Wow. I grew up at the Keystone Korner. Yeah, he's done a lot since then - not that the Keystone was any small achievement. Good for you, Todd Barkan. And I saw Joanne Brackeen at the Keystone. Good for her too. Sure, lots of worthy people overlooked, but ain't that always the case? Quote
Sandman Posted June 19, 2017 Report Posted June 19, 2017 Has Barry Harris ever won this honor? If not, he seems like a good pick. He's 87 years old and still playing and teaching. Quote

Sandman Posted June 20, 2017 Report Posted June 20, 2017 Thanks -- I should have known! Somehow when I was looking at a list of them I missed it. I was watching a live feed of a show of his on Sunday night and it reminded me of how much I have enjoyed seeing his shows in the past. Quote
