I can recall salivating over the records that Jack Cooke would write about in his "recent American records" essays. Terrific reviews from Harrison, Morgan etc. A big influence on me at the time.. Current jazz journalism doesn't seem to approach the standards these achieved. Incidentally Ron Atkins still reviews occasionally in Jazz Journal. My errror -- it's Roland Atkins, not Ronald. 6 hours ago, sidewinder said: I have bound annual volumes of most of the 1960s Jazz Monthly mags. They are an invaluable resource - and still a good read. Terry Martin's two-part piece on Art Pepper has never been surpassed. Likewise, his piece on Ornette. Quote

This recording is (IMO) a real "sleeper" - probably because it was released on the rather unheralded Timeless label - but both Cohn and the De Graaff + Serierse + Ineke rhythm section are superb .... Don`t have that specific problem - but connecting to individual threads proceeds rather slow since yesterday evening .... Quote
Larry Kart Posted September 9, 2017 Author Report Posted September 9, 2017 Oops - John S. authoritatively says it's Ronald Atkins. Quote
