Hardbopjazz Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 What are some solo performance albums that others like besides pianists? I have these. Sonny Rollins "Solo Album" Ron Carters "Alone" Quote
erwbol Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 (edited) Anthony Braxton - Solo (Pisa) 1982 (Golden Years, Leo) Insanely good and better sound quality then the other two Braxton solo live recordings on Golden Years. For Alto is the classic, of course, but the Pisa album deserves to be counted among his best as well. Edited May 26, 2017 by erwbol Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted May 26, 2017 Author Report Posted May 26, 2017 I have that one by Anthony Braxton. I forgot about it. Quote
HutchFan Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 (edited) Ralph Towner - Time Line (ECM) Dave Holland - Emerald Tears (ECM) I suppose stringed instruments like the guitar or bass are a bit of a "cheat" because -- like pianos -- they offer harmonic possibilities that aren't open to one-note-at-a-time instruments like saxophones or trumpets. erwbol Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 Dave Holland - Ones All (Intuition Music) Another favourite. Quote

Peter Friedman Posted May 26, 2017 Report Posted May 26, 2017 I personally do not enjoy solo albums other than by either piano or guitar. Here is a solo guitar album I like. Quote

duaneiac Posted May 27, 2017 Report Posted May 27, 2017 Three of the tracks are solo vibraphone performances from the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival On the remaining studio tracks, through the magic of overdubbing, he also played piano/electric piano/organ. Quote
JohnS Posted May 27, 2017 Report Posted May 27, 2017 I'll second Cyril's recommendation for David Murray's Solo Live. Here's a short sample of Murray's more recent solo playing. Quote
jlhoots Posted May 27, 2017 Report Posted May 27, 2017 Reginald Workman: The Works Of Workman (Denon) - don't know if it has ever been released on CD. Quote

jcam_44 Posted May 28, 2017 Report Posted May 28, 2017 My two favorite solo albums are: Steve Coleman - Invisible Paths and Vinny Golia - Solo Vinny's album "Clarinet" is also wildly entertaining, which I didn't expect for a clarinet hahaha. Nate Wooley has quite a collection of solo trumpet recordings my favorite being "Wrong Shape To Be A Storyteller". Syllables 8 and 9 are quite good too. William Parker "Lifting Sanctions" is excellent. Parker has a lot as well," Crumbling in the Shadows..." is a 3 disc box set that in the past was pretty cheap, $20 to $25, and I recommend that too Quote
Guy Berger Posted May 30, 2017 Report Posted May 30, 2017 I've barely scratched the surface in this genre but the Coleman (INVISIBLE PATHS) and Lacy (ONLY MONK) are outstanding. Quote

mjazzg Posted June 4, 2017 Report Posted June 4, 2017 (edited) So many fine solo recordings and without even mentioning Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell (who each probably deserve a solo recordings thread to themselves), here's some great ones from my collection that get revisited often Peter Brotzmann - 14 Love Poems [FMP] Joseph Jarman - Sunbound Volume One [AECO] Famoudou Don Moye - Sun Percussion Volume One [AECO] Brother Malachi Favors Magoustous - Natural & Spiritual [AECO] Arve Henriksen - Sakuteiki [Rune Grammofon] Sabir Mateen - Ardla XXX [Rogue Art] Jerome Cooper - Unpredictability Of Predictability [About Time] Nicole Mitchell - Engraved In The Wind [Rogue Art] I'll second the Gunter Sommer, Marion Brown, Vinny Golia and Steve Coleman mentions above Edited June 4, 2017 by mjazzg Quote
