I suspect 10-20 years from now, this tiny little unassuming newly-discovered clip of Mobley will be one of the very first “visuals” that come to mind practically every time I think of Hank, and some sort of image will surely (unconsciously) spring into my mind’s eye.

And fwiw, before less than an hour ago, I suspect the first image of Hank I would have thought of (generally), would have otherwise usually been the modern (CD-era) cover of Slice of the Top (my favorite Hank leader-date).

Amazing how powerful the ‘moving image’ is - even one as tiny and otherwise ‘pedestrian’ as this one.

For all I may-know there are some more Jazzmen never seen in Video jazz-festivals , jazz-TV's-programs , music biographyes. They are..: pianists  ,,Red Garland , Elmo Hope , Richie Powell ,) drummer ,,Frank Butler , Dave Tough , Zutty Singleton , Charlie Persip(*few Videos)) guitar ,,Charlie Christian ,) trumpet ,,Clifford Brown(*just 'one-short' Clips) , Blue Mitchell(*one time with Horace Silver ,5t) ,. Also never in Video groups like..: Miles Davis + John Coltrane 5t ,Red Garland ,Paul Chambers , 'Philly' Joe Jones ,, Clifford Brown+ Max Roach ,5t ,). All of these are the jazzmen I remember, so in case ,plaese, adds any others ,NOT, listed here.,-

i mean it has been mentioned elsewhere Hank did perform w/ Monk period.  But I later seemed to find other things which pointed to the Steve Allen show thing.  But disregarding that I have seen it mentioned that Hank performed with Monk.  Is anything as far as facts or data known about this collaboration?

Thanks everyone, glad you enjoyed the clip. I noticed it while having lunch and watching the Monk documentary (it's on Vimeo, although a lot of it appears on Straight, No Chaser). I had to "rewind" it several times because I couldn't believe it. That's why I asked Cuscuna, who knew Mobley, and also checked with Bertrand Uberall what footage there was of Mobley. Among other things, I also checked this thread.

Glad to see it on JazzWax too, although about the clip being too short, as I say in the blog, the whole sequence with those four in the kitchen at the Vanguard (dated, almost certainly, June 19-25, 1967) lasts 2:35. Some of it can be seen on The Jazz Baroness too (it's on YouTube). The best bit with Mobley on is what you see in the clip, which again, I had to give it all the light I could in order to distinguish Mobley's face.

Is there a (free) streaming clip of the exact scene with Mobley, at the light levels the film is more normally shown at?  Like what did it look like before it was brightened so considerably.

Great find! Such a small thing, but so surprisingly exciting too!

Just woke up from a dream where, a day after the clip surfaced, 20 different people posted 20 different full Mobley concerts on Facebook with the caption 'you didn't know about this one?!?'

I'm going back to bed :)

Seriously, though, is it possible Newport 1959 with Blakey was filmed?
