thirdtry Posted April 22, 2017 Report Posted April 22, 2017 Available on CD for the first time, "Your Place Or Mine?" by Flip Phillips. Best remembered for his tenor saxophone playing with Norman Granz’Jazz at the Philharmonic from 1946 to 1957 Flip Phillips was a giant of a jazz artist. Phillips moved to Florida in 1954 where aside from occasional tours he was content to play locally in semiretirement. This 1963 duet recording with guitarist Dell Staton was one of only 2 albums Phillips made in the almost 20 years period after JATP. 1. Come Rain or Come Shine 4:29 2. Ja Da 3:34 3. Just Say I Love Her 3:23 4. Talk of the Town 3:54 5. Summertime 2:35 6. Nuages 3:09 7. Scatterbrain 1:42 8. Chloe 4:55 9. Moonlight In Vermont 4:30 10. Jazz Me Blues 2:45 11. Big Beat Steve Posted April 24, 2017 Report Posted April 24, 2017 What kind of label is this??? Is this the label that was resurrected/reissued by Zim on LP in the 70s, e.g. for an obscure early Zoot Sims date (with leader Dick Nash)? What's coming full circle there (or not)? Quote
thirdtry Posted April 24, 2017 Author Report Posted April 24, 2017 I believe Delmark Records now owns and has been re-issuing material from the Jump Label. http://delmark.com/delmark.jump.htm Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted April 24, 2017 Report Posted April 24, 2017 Thanks for the info, but where does Flip Phillips fit into this Jump catalog? I cannot find his reissue in this listing (on the admittedly exceedingly crudely designed Delmark website). Quote
thirdtry Posted April 24, 2017 Author Report Posted April 24, 2017 Perhaps (and this is just a guess) Delmark picked up the session and thought it fit best on the Jump label. Hopefully Delmark's front page will be updated soon to announce this release. In any case I'm just glad there's more Flip coming to CD! Quote
Peter Friedman Posted April 24, 2017 Report Posted April 24, 2017 Actually Flip recorded many times after the JATP days. He has CDs on Verve, Arbors, Chiaroscuro ,Gemini and perhaps some other labels in his later years. Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 24, 2017 Report Posted April 24, 2017 Awfully short track times, that's for sure. Quote
Niko Posted April 24, 2017 Report Posted April 24, 2017 2 hours ago, Peter Friedman said: Actually Flip recorded many times after the JATP days. He has CDs on Verve, Arbors, Chiaroscuro ,Gemini and perhaps some other labels in his later years. I also found this misleading but if you read carefully... "This 1963 duet recording with guitarist Dell Staton was one of only 2 albums Phillips made in the almost 20 years period after JATP. " this refers to 1957 to 1977 so that it seems to be at least more or less correct. Quote
thirdtry Posted May 4, 2017 Author Report Posted May 4, 2017 Just a quick update: Delmark Records' coming soon page has just been updated and this is officially a Delmark Records release as I thought. Quote
