Milestones Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 R.I.P. Mr. Blythe. I certainly enjoyed the music you made. How strange this happened now, given that over the past few days there was a renewed discussion going on at the Arthur Blythe thread. Quote
Tom in RI Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 I was just reading through the Arthur Blythe thread on this forum for the second or third time yesterday. Think I'll spin some duets with David Eyges today. Quote
Milestones Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 Now playing Night Song from 1997. He put together some interesting lineups, such as using marimba and tuba. Quote
Milestones Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 Those two by Joey Baron are really worthy checking out, especially the second release (the one on top in the picture). Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 28, 2017 Report Posted March 28, 2017 (edited) I've been listening a lot lately to that BGO reissue of his first four Columbia albums--will put it on again now. Thank you, Mr. Blythe. Edited March 28, 2017 by ghost of miles Quote

Guy Berger Posted March 29, 2017 Report Posted March 29, 2017 The DeJohnette and Tapscott recordings here are jazz classics. Quote
rpklich Posted March 30, 2017 Report Posted March 30, 2017 At a Chicago Jazz Fest many years ago he was featured in a Horace Tapscott led reprisal of the Sonny Criss lp "Sonny's Dream ( Birth of the New Cool)". Arthur Blythe took the Criss role and was great. It remains one of the best sets I ever heard at the many Chicago Jazz Fests I attended. God bless Arthur Blythe. R.I.P. Quote

I wish it were taped. I don't think you meant 'reprisal' though. Quote

Combined! They seem to think that Arthur Blythe was the Reese's Cups of Jazz. Still not ever on CD, correct? Quote
Hot Ptah Posted March 30, 2017 Report Posted March 30, 2017 (edited) Most of the Columbia albums led by Blythe are not available on CD. Four of them were released just last year on CD in a budget two CD package, on the BGO label. I think that this was the first CD reissue for at least two of the albums. Some of the later Columbias have never been reissued on CD. https://www.discogs.com/Arthur-Blythe-Four-Arthur-Blythe-Albums-On-Two-Discs-Lenox-Avenue-Breakdown-In-The-Tradition-Illusio/release/8819284 I have long though that the Complete Columbia Arthur Blythe Albums would be a good Mosaic set. Or at least make them available for download on a platform like Bandcamp where you have the option of downloading the albums in lossless formats. Here's hoping that BGO (or someone else) releases the rest of Columbias on cd. Quote
mandrill Posted March 31, 2017 Report Posted March 31, 2017 RIP, Mr. Blythe. Spinning this LP right now- the first recording under his name i believe. Good folks uploaded it on Youtube. Quote

Per Wikipedia, "The Grip" (on India Navigation) was recorded and released before "Bush Baby." What weird is they say "In The Tradition" was released before "Lenox Avenue Breakdown." I seem to recall Lenox being released first. Quote
