A timeless performance from exactly 50 years ago today, December 17, 1968 --

Here she was just 6 months before her final curtain, still learning new material and still delivering a remarkable performance despite a bit of hoarseness (which actually works in the context of the song).  She could say more with just a look and a little head nod than most of today's singers can with all the overheated melisma at their disposal.

Desert-island Ellington. Cootie lit a fire when he returned to the fold.

Yep. Perhaps my desert island Ellington recording. I think the tension between Ray Nance and Cootie Williams helped spark the band to great heights. Of course, they couldn't co-exist in the same section (let alone the same band) for more than a couple of years.  I've only had the original 2 LP set and the 2 CD reissue of same. Missed this one with the 10 extra  tracks. Must look into that.

I know some people have expressed reservations about this one, but I really enjoy it.

John,

FYI - The ten bonus tracks on the Atlantic Jazz Masters/Rhino CD set were originally available on this LP:

Just in case you've already got it. No need for duplication. ;)

Tommy Flanagan - Jazz Poet (Timeless)
with George Mraz and Kenny Washington

A favorite of mine, prompted by EKE BBB's Flanagan post.

Thanks! I think I have (or had) that Ellington recording. Sometimes I regret getting rid of so many of my LP's. But sadly, necessary.

That's a great Flanagan CD, too. Up next:
