Sidney Bechet - Jazz Nocturne 1: Bunk, Bocage & Bechet in Boston (Jazz Crusade). This series opens with perhaps the best music Bechet and Bunk Johnson produced during Bechet's 1945 residency at the Savoy Cafe - a rehearsal, during which Bechet plays only clarinet. (Bunk disliked Bechet's soprano sax.). There's also a broadcast with Peter Bocage, who replaced Bunk for a few weeks.

Milt Jackson - Second Nature: The Savoy Sessions (Savoy, rec. 1956)
with Lucky Thompson (ts), Hank Jones [or Wade Legge] (p), Wendell Marshall (b), and Kenny Clarke (d)

Bags and Lucky Thompson together with that rhythm section. No surprise that this is so good.

👍👍👍!!!

:tup Probably the best way to hear that music - outside of original 78s.

today's review piqued my interest too but not got around to listening to it yet. Your impressions?

I listened a couple times through Bandcamp on my iMac, then bought a CD on eBay.

The cover of Hemphill's Dogon A.D. was least interesting to me, but then the original album is a masterpiece. The poem set to music was very effective. On the whole it sounded like something I will return to often, hence the CD.
