The first album is marred by the use of the dreaded electric piano on some tracks.  The second album was recorded at a long-gone club called "In Your Ear" once located in nearby Palo Alto.  I wonder exactly where it was.  PA today would be a very unlikely place for a jazz club.

Re Musique du Bois. Phil plays well on the session, not so much because of the rhythm section, but almost in spite of it, esp. Richard Davis, who never seems quite in sync with the others, and plays as if he wants to be recognized as co-leader on the date.

To me the Byard + Davis + Dawson combo enhanced each recording session  - and this one is no exception ...

I dunno. Isn't that just the way Richard Davis plays?!?! Me personally, I like the way Davis -- and the entire rhythm section -- sounds. And I like the way Phil plays too!
