Heath in fine form with Wynton Kelly, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, and Tootie Heath. What's not to like? First recording of "Gingerbread Boy" and of Jimmy making "On the Trail" a jazz standard for a while.

This is a good live recording .... still this platter always leaves me wondering why Esther Phillips - backed by a crack soul proven band - was directed by Atlantic in her 2nd stint with the company to wade in more blues oriented territory while Aretha Franklin (with "This Girl's In Love With You") was oozing S-O-U-L .... and selling tons of records ....

Japanese issue.  Extra tracks from other Blakey sessions.

I like this edition of the Messengers and particularly enjoy the Lerner and Loewe recording.
