Glad that I did because it is a completely different record! 👍 Quote
Pim Posted November 10 Report Posted November 10 Bought right after Vijay’s excellent concert in Amsterdam. Another great one from this trio. Compassion is something the world needs especially today Vijay said and he’s very right about that. I just found out my LP display works for cds as well Quote
Pim Posted November 10 Report Posted November 10 Still enjoying this boxed set a lot. Bought it for something like 25 euros. Lovely music, great sound and a very nice booklet. Now spinning the first disc which contains music from The Shape of Jazz to Come, Art of the Improvisers, Twins and Change of the Century. Quote

To me, he sometimes sounds a bit stiff and edgy. But maybe this is a personal impression. His bop piano doesn not "flow" like Bud´s did, or does not have the humour in it like Monk had......hard to say, he sounds fine on ballads, but maybe he just did not have so much tehnique like Bud or Monk..... I enjoy Jordan's playing. Often, it has a gliding quality that very much appeals to me. We all hear music differently. 😉 Edited November 10 by HutchFan Quote
Peter Friedman Posted November 10 Report Posted November 10 (edited) We all have our individual taste. The Ellington/Hodges "Back To Back" is, for me, an outstanding record. Duke Jordan has long been a strong jazz piano favorite of mine. His playing is very identifiable, which is not the case for a large number of other jazz piano players. I am a big fan of Duke Jordan, not only for his wonderful playing, but also his many terrific compositions. Currently listening to: Edited November 10 by Peter Friedman Quote
EKE BBB Posted November 10 Report Posted November 10 (edited) Fats Waller - Piano Solos 1929-1941 (RCA-Jazz Tribune, 2 CD) I am a diehard fan of James P. Johnson, Donald Lambert, Willie The Lion Smith, Earl Hines or Art Tatum, but, in my view, there ain’t a 2cd compilation of classic jazz piano (+stride) of such astounding perfection. MY DESERT ISLAND 1st selection record, and the playlist I would love to be played in my funeral! Edited November 10 by EKE BBB Quote

While I seldom listen to what may be called "free jazz", I will say that this is a marvelous set. The music is not "conservative" in any way, but it should appeal to a wide range of jazz listeners. At least it does to me. Edited November 10 by John Tapscott Quote

JSngry Posted November 10 Author Report Posted November 10 Rare phrasing, the melodies are sung, but the effect is speech. What a singer! Quote

jazzbo Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 Re-listening to this disc before moving on, it’s a good chunk of “Miles Davis in Europe” plus the track “Bye Bye Blackbird” which was not on that original LP. Phenomenal music I've loved for about 50 years (except "Bye Bye Blackbird" which I have known for a shorter period of time). “Miles in France 1963 & 1964 The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8” disc 3 Quote

I just got rid of the more easy listening things with let´s say the 3 Sounds and a lot of the stuff with organ, other than the "Date with Jimmy Smith" , but this here I like more since it has more name jazz musicians. I can´t listen too much to the Herman Foster block chords.... 4 hours ago, jazzbo said: Re-listening to this disc before moving on, it’s a good chunk of “Miles Davis in Europe” plus the track “Bye Bye Blackbird” which was not on that original LP.
