In-Out Records IOR CD77158-2 [2024] Saw the Arkestra live yesterday/today "round midnight" in Göttingen https://www.jazzfestival-goettingen.de/event/sun-ra-arkestra/ Was the gig without Marshall Allen himself ???? 3 hours ago, HutchFan said: I saw this in the collection of the legendary "Jazz Freddy" here in Viena, who played LPs all night long in his club, if there was not live music, or in the afterhours after a live gig. I had played there so many times, and remember some of his records. This one is one of them. I saw Cecil Payne once, but that was around 2000 and he was very old and had to sit and seemed to be blind. But it was a stellar group with Ron Carter in it. They played a Bird-Diz-Monk Memory Concert. I remember Payne´s composition "Flyin Fish". He was one of the first to play bop. I remember his great solos on "Stay on it" with the Diz Big Band. And on alto with J.J. Johnson and Bud Powell...... On the other hand, I am not always super happy with Duke Jordan. To me, he sometimes sounds a bit stiff and edgy. But maybe this is a personal impression. His bop piano doesn not "flow" like Bud´s did, or does not have the humour in it like Monk had......hard to say, he sounds fine on ballads, but maybe he just did not have so much tehnique like Bud or Monk..... Rabshakeh Posted November 10 Report Posted November 10 Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges – Side By Side I don't really like Back to Back (too relaxed and bluesy) so I had never bothered to listen to this one until today. Glad that I did because it is a completely different record! Quote

jazzbo Posted November 10 Report Posted November 10 Had a great dinner with my brother and sister-in-law, so good to have a long talk with them about this year and its many events. Now a very cool morning with a hungry dog and a stereo system warming up. This is the second time I’ve revisited this recording from the mid-nineties in the last wo mnths. It sounds so good on the system now and I appreciate it in a new way. Herbie Hancock “The New Standard” Verve cd What a band! New music director Knoell Scott (as, bs) mentioned him often. Marshall Allen was in Göttingen in November 2017. Quote
