Gheorghe Posted May 26 Report Posted May 26 This is a pure bebop session, the long title tune is based on "Idaho" and an ideal playing vehicle for all those great soloists. Mike Brecker in the best Coltrane tradition, Lee Konitz very very fine, Charles McPherson, and wonderful Jack Walrath on trumpet, very very much Fats Navarro influenced. Strange the combination of Mingus constant pianist Neloms on acoustic piano and Ken Werner on Fender Rhodes. never heard something like that. From the bassists, I think I like George Mraz better. Eddie Gomez was a wonderful bassist, but if it comes to solos, it sounds like exercises, sorry. One downer is that the ensemble parts are not very together and the mix is a mess. The solos are very fine recorded, but not the ensemble playing. The ballad Farwell Farwell is wonderful, a typical Mingus ballad which he also still recorded two months earlier on his last recording as a bassist. I like the tempo. Some players do ballads at too slow pace, this is a fine slow fox tempo. Ricky Ford and Lee Konitz and Larry Coryell are wonderful on it. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 26 Report Posted May 26 Kenny Barron “Beyond This Place” Exciting new release from Kenny Barron featuring Steve Nelson and the wonderful alto of Immanuel Wilkins. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted May 26 Report Posted May 26 I have been going through a huge stack of boxes of unheard CDs and found this 2019 release that I overlooked. It's a real gem with a number of works by great bassists, many of them not widely known. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 26 Report Posted May 26 Miki Yamanaka “Human Dust Suite” I bought this directly from Miki and it was nicely signed personally to me by Miki. I like her work. Quote
